File Compression

I have a boat load of videos on my hdd that I rarely watch but I dont want to delete.
Are there any lossless file compression programs out there that would compress a divx/xvid video by a decent amount? Size of the resulting files is far, far more important than the speed it takes to compress it. I've tried "best" setting on both 7-zip and winzip but these dont compress it much.
I know that xvid is already an extremely compressed format but wondered if there is anything that can make it even smaller.

I've never found anything. An external HD or a DVD burner are really the two best options. A $30 burner and a stack of blank DVDs will do wonders for little used files you want to archive. An external HD will get filled before you know it and you will soon be in the same boat.

 

There's not really anything to make a "lossless" video file a lot smaller. x264 or mp4 are probably the best quality compression. But compression=lossy, but from the samples I've seen they are very good/excellent quality.

Xvid4PSP seems like an easy way to convert to many different containers, including the above x264/mp4.

Another popular alternative is to use AutoGK and maybe set quality to 100% (or lower quality if you want a smaller file size). You can even set a fixed file size if you want.

I always find writable DVD's die on me after a year or so.

 

There is a program that "claims" it can do that, Google for "KGB Archiver" I have played with it some. Not sure how it will do on a video. Good luck.
