file extension problem

I know you guys can help. This is a very simple problem, and I've fixed it before, I just don't remember how! I just bought sonar 6, and have been using it for some time now with no problems at all. The problem I have however has little to do with the program itself but the file extensions.

Sonar makes a file extension of CWP when you save a project, I guess it stands for CakeWalk Project or something like that. BUT for some reason Adobe Acrobat reader always tries to open them. I've tried the right click open with thing, but Sonar 6 is not in my programs list for some reason, and when I search for it, it doesn't work. There is a way in windows XP to associate files with other programs, I know this. How is it done. I just want to be able to click on my project, and have Sonar open it. Not have to open sonar, and find the file first. It's just easier to click the file and have everything work out. It's more of a pain in the but thing, than a REAL problem, but Still, I know you guys can help me out.

If I figure it out, I will post again so you do not waste your time. You have plenty of people with spyware problems to help, and honestly they should come first. Thanks guys.

Right click on a .cwp file =>open with=>choose program=>(If it's not in this list)then browse in the program files folder until you find Sonar 6(or the company that produces it)'s folder then find Sonar 6.exe and select it and click ok.

 

That did not work.
I tried to do it with the shortcut on my desktop, and it didn't work either. Now I have an icon in my programs list for the right click find programs thing that has no icon and is not a valild win32 app.

What is the description of the application in the list. If it is Sonar 6 than it should work.

How do you reassociate files with their respective programs? There has to be a way to set these back to default without using this god forsaken list.

 

Try this open my computer go to tools then folder options than file types. Find .cwp and edit the association from there. Pick your program and then under advanced you can choose the action you want the program to take.

 

still doesn't open
I click on it and it gives me the location C recorded then the name of the file
then it says it isn't a valid win 32 application. Whatever
I don't know what to do

 

Now I have a new problem. How do I remove that program from the programs list, it's not right, it has no icon, and it doen't work. Can I replace it with the real one? WTF

 

I wouldn't worry about the programs list. It's just a list doesn't effect anything. It seems like you're selecting the wrong file. If your desktop shortcut opens sonar 6 then to find the correct file name: right click on the shortcut and select properties. In the find target box should be the name of the program you want to use to open the cwp files.

 

From the Control Panel select Folder Options, from here go to the File Types Tab and select the file association your looking for in which case it would be .CWP, after you have located the extension click change to set which program should open that type extension.

If you do not have the extension in the list then click new, enter CWP and set which program you wish to open that extension.
