I'm looking at a program called CM DiskCleaner and it's list of default filters for "garbage". The filters apparently search for all items with the following file extensions:

    .db$
    .pch
    .ncb
    .aps
    .ilk
    .sik
    .prv
    .dmp
    .cpy
    .~mp
    .ftg
    .fts
    .nch
    .tmp
    File_id.diz
    .nu4
    .nu3
    .old
    .gid
    .bak

I have to ass-u-me that the programmer is top notch and wouldn't lead a beginner astray, but I'm curious as to the meanings of these extensions.

Is there a list somewhere that tells you what they mean?

    Thanks -

btw; my 12GB HD has only about 800MB free so I'm trying to find a novice level cleanup tool to help remove the more obscure junk.

most of those are temporary or installation files. Things like .bak are backups of files. Looks like that utility is simply meant to find all the wasted space consumed by temporary files.
