file keeps opening as media file

i have a receiver that needs to be flashed with a program once in a while.
program comes as a downloadable zip file.
when i open it in winzip or winrar, it immediately shows as media file, with little waveform on it. under file description, winzip shows it as "stream tracker 2 module".
when unzipped, this file is assigned to winamp automatically.
i am afraid that winamp corrupts file by tagging it.
no matter what i do, i can not remove that "media" tag off it.
receiver takes program ok, but has small quirks as a result.
hence, i am trying to unzip that program "in pure state". normally, they should open as bin. or rom. files.

I think it doesn't make any difference that the file is associated with Winamp and gets assigned a Winamp icon.

I don't have Winamp but either in something like Winamp>Tools or Options or Preferences there should be an option for file associations. You would want to uncheck the boxes for .bin and .rom so that they no longer are associated with that program. If you can't find the option check the Winamp Help.

even with ALL files associations removed from winamp, it will still tag this file as winamp one.
i have uninstalled winamp and rebooted my machine.

it is fixed!!!!!!!!!!! now it shows the way it is supposed - .stz file.

I'm glad you were able to set things the way you like. If you need Winamp perhaps during installation you could try custom install and try to make sure it does not take over any associations during installation. Not always an easy task because many programs try to hide the option of managing associations during the install process.
