File ownership....

I'm trying to back up some data for a friend; his laptop motherboard died and I removed the hard drive, put it in an enclosure, plugged it into a USB port on a desktop PC, and tried to save the stuff in My Documents. Problem is: "Access Is Denied" because he had it passworded. No biggie, right? I just use the steps here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421/en-us to take ownership of the folder, right? WRONG! When I right click, there's no security tab. I know there's a way to "install" the security tab, or there's a work-around, but I don't remember how it's done, or where to find the info. If anyone can shed some light, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!

I was able to save the data by booting to a UBCD4Win, thereby circumnavigating the security and ownership issues, and just copied the folders to C:, and I'll now burn them to CD/DVD. But I'd still like to know for future reference: how do I take ownership if the Security tab is not available? In the Knowledge Base link I posted above, it actually says "click the Security tab (if it's available)" but doesn't say what to do if the tab isn't there....

Me and the computer tech that I'm training under spent a while working on a similar problem... We too had instructions that called for the use of options under the security tab, and we too could not find the security tab anywhere. I am using Vista, so I can't go through the steps myself to make sure everything is right, but I believe there is a place in Folder Options, under the view tab, near the bottom, that says something about "use simple file sharing" or something to that effect. If that is checked, then the security tab will not show when view the properties of a folder.

I just googled it and got plenty of results, looks like I was right.. http://geekswithblogs.net/ram/archive/2006/03/09/71789.aspx It also says the same thing at the top of the article you linked, so you may have already done this, or you might have just missed it. Let me know, I'd like to know if this is what the problem was.

I hope this helps you and solves the problem.

Thanks for the input. I'll check it out and I'll add this thread to my 'stash-o-good-stuff' folder for future reference.
