File recovery after formatting

Is there any way to recover files (specifically image files) after reformatting?

My sister lost 5 years worth of pictures, which she thought she had backed up before formatting, but the backups failed.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks Halo, but it doesn't seem like that one will work for me. When I try to access drive C: in the "Recover from Drive" dropdown menu (which is the only drive available outside the A: drive), it gives the error, "Unable to open the selected disk."

    Thanks plodr.

I downloaded PC Inspector File Recovery now, but I'm having a little difficulty using it (new at the whole data recovery thing). The data was previously on the C: drive, which was then formatted, and is once again the C: drive (NTFS both times). Does anyone know what options I should select?

    Hi

Ok I tried this on my Vista pc *XP is not really different* for being able to recover off the C: drive, it works ok, but remember to login as Admin if the Windows version is XP or Vista ( if another Windows version please tell us what one )

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Recuva_-_File_Recovery_d5514.html

You will if it finds deleted files, notice that in the main window of the files it finds it will give you the status of these files as in Excellent, Poor, Unrecoverable etc

Also do not when hitting Recover choose the C: drive to recover the files back to, choose another device such as another internal HD, CDRW or preferably USB Pen or USB External HD, if you do you run the risk of further overwriting the very files your trying to recover.

    PC Inspector

This is exactly the same as Recuva, do not restore the files to the C: Drive, the step to take are again make sure your logged in as Admin on Xp/Vista etc ( note for Vista, you will need to right click the programs shortcut and run as Admin, or it wont pickup the drives correctly )

Once run, click your Language > click the + Bin icon to find lost data > it should scan all your drives and in the Logical Drive tab click Fixed Disk #1 > click the green tick and the application will scan for deleted or recoverable files, a long list of files will appear ( if anything is recoverable ) green is good change yellow not so good.

Highlight all the files and folders or the ones with names you wish to recover, to highlight all just left click mouse in the recovered files window adn drag a box over all to highlight / to recover certain ones hold CTRL key down and click the ones you want, then on one highlighted file right click and choose Save to, and choose a location again not the C: Drive.

Note: these may or may not recover all files even if the recovery status of them is good.
