File recovery

Does anyone know if there is any undelete/file recovery software that actually reconstructs the disk/file structure instead of copying files to some other place?

I killed :-o a _lot_ :cry of files on a USB extension drive and shut it down before there was anything written to it (unless there were some hidden writing processes going on). But I don't really have space anywhere to copy piles of files nor time to play with them one at a time.
