How would one transfer a MS Word file with embedded pictures from one computer to another? The file is 4 MB. Can it be done with floppies?
CD writing is not an option unfortunately.

It seems the file is too big for the ISP to allow it by email.

    What about winzip?

    Thanks all.

Seems to me Word docs are super compressible. So its possible :)

In Winzip you mean? It's the pics that are the problem. They are too big to send separately

    Can't be done with floppies?

Yeah I meant compress it with winzip.

And yep, it can be done with floppies.

If as a single file its too big, then span the fle across more than one floppy.

    Winzip supports that.

Practical application. I made a word file with an embedded picture (not huge, just for example)into a Winzip file. Original file size: 34Kb. Zip file size 16 Kb. So, it should work just fine. :)

Okay, let me see if I have this straight. The file is 4.5MB. I can't use floppies to transport it as it is, but if I winzip it (it still is around 4MB, compressed) then the floppies will be able to split it up at one end and re-constitute it at the other?

Then unzip it at the other end.

    Anything I've missed?

I think that sums it up.

I am asking for a relative, and I dont have the file, but I also made one up quickly that came to 4.5MB, and winzip only got it down to 4MB. I guess it depends on how much is text and how much is jpgs

I'll pass it on. Thanks a lot Adrynalyne, BillH, and Robo.

In gratitude, I'll go give the cat a treat :)

Okay I just took the treat back from the cat. It involved surgery( j/k :) )

The floppy wont take the zipped file. It just says it it too large and there is no option to insert another disk.

    Any suggestions?

This from my relative. It actually says:

"The file being copied is too large for the destination drive. If possible, insert a higher-capacity disk." Then I click try again and it says this: "Cannot copy Site1: There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again".

I know you probably already read the proceedure file Mr.P, but just in case here's the Winzip help file method:

    1. Start WinZip.
    2. Drag and drop the c:\data folder from My Computer or Windows Explorer to the WinZip window.
    3. In the Add dialog box, type the filename of the Zip file (A:\DATA.ZIP).
    4. Click the Add button.

If more than one disk is needed, you will be prompted for additional disks.

You might also try splitting the file.

Thanks to everybody. My daughter came up with an idea. She created a website in Geocities. She had the relative send the file over by MSN, and she posted it. Now the relative can download it at the other PC (which doesn't have MSN)

    Seems to work :)

Im going to try the other hints as well, in case of future problems.

    That's a big file. 9,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes

    fun with numbers

    Lemme see.
    1128 floppies/cubic ft.
    1,457,664 bytes/floppy
    So that's 1,644,244,992 bytes/cubic ft.
So 9 billion gigabytes on floppies occupies 5,470,000,000 cubic/ft.
    A standard 60 ton boxcar is 6636 cu/ft. (net)
So you need 824,292 boxcars to hold that file.
    A boxcar is 68'5" long.
The train holding that file is 10,681 miles long.
    I'm not bored.
    Really.
