greybuffalo, tell us what kind of file it is. And, are you able to copy the file to a flash drive or external HDD and open it there?

Yes, but is it a Word document, a PDF document, or what? If it's a PDF file, here is a free online PDF editor/converter that might open the file if it's not corrupted: http://www.zamzar.com/

PS Mods, I got this link from one of the posts on MajorGeeks --- When I did a search for ZamZar on this site, I tried to find the url that linked to MajorGeeks, but couldn't, so I hope this link is okay.

    Hi

What is the file extention of the file? (need to go into Folder > View and untick hide known file types) or right click the file and choose properties and what does it say the file is associated with?

    Hi Greybuffalo

Make a copy of this file (right click and copy) then paste it into another location on your HDD, then and depending on what file format you think this file was change its extention, so of a PDF then its filename.pdf and if a Word doc then filename.doc and see how you go with that.

As Halo says make a copy of the file, then try renaming it without those first two periods. Say from " L.J.'s right of abode " to " LJs right of abode.pdf " if it still doesn't like ".pdf" try " LJs right of adobe.doc "

If it is a damaged PDF and you feel like experimenting you could look at replies #5 and #6 of this thread.
