Suddenly, a bunch of files stored in the C\Windows.old\folder have disappeared. Tried a restore...no success. My desktop shortcuts no longer work and the message is the shortcut has been changed or moved. WTF??

i know the win old folder on my machine deleted itself after i installed the the latest 10 build ten days later, do you think a data recovery tool like recuva can find them on the drive?

    Have you looked for a windows.old.1? I have a '7 that has 2 windows.old. I think 1 was windows.old.old.

Try the search utility 'Everything' and type in "old". If it's anywhere, 'Everything' will find it.

    Else @pistol's thought.

Erasus couldn't find them. .old in a search didn't do anything.

Search using one of your shortcuts in the searchbox?

Is there a 'file history' in 10?

There is a file history....but it only produces the current files, no previous or deleted files. Wish I had known that the windows.old files would disappear after a time.

Have an image? They might be in there so you can grab them and move them elsewhere.

Maybe that is part of the 7GB MS reserves for updates.

    Did a restore....didn't help.

Windows 10 will automatically delete the Windows.old folder after 1 month.
Why you can't recover it is anyone's guess.

The beauty of Windows 10...
Windows 10 users are awfully quit...

Restore inside 10 isn't the same thing as restoring an image you've created. Perhaps I wasn't clear on that.

I save multiple images for our 5 Windows installs. If the newest one doesn't give me what I want, I go back further. Eventually, after I've grabbed what I want, I can restore to the latest image.

Aw, TimW, I'm disappointed. You really do need to image.
