Someone downloaded 3 music files to my pc, but now I cant do anything with them, I cannot shred them, cant delete them, cant move them, cant do anything with them, they wont even play on WMP, so I was wondering if theres a program that will allow me to delete them.

I have tried Pocket Killbox and HiJackThis, both do not want to delete the file.

try one of the below or both

    1. MoveOnBoot this one, once you dragNdrop the file or browse for its location, deletes the file on reboot, so any applications that have locked the file are not running so cannot lock it before deletion.. my fav!
    2. Unlocker

  5. Bladesofhalo

    None of those worked
When I go to the properties of these files says the file is 0 bytes although it claims to be 3.19 MB on the outside
When I try to select the file with all the programs listed above the error message comes up "File type is invalid"

Boot into safe mode and try again, manually or with any of those apps.

Run chkdsk /f. Usually this behavior is caused by file system damage.

Use the command prompt (Start>Run>cmd). I had this prob before. Type in the location of where the mp3s are located (i.e. cd c:\my folder). Then

    1. Type "dir /x" and make a note of the short filenames of the corrupted directories or files. (i.e. newwav~1.mp3)
    2. Type "del /s" <shortname> (i.e. del /s newwav~1.mp3) OR if that doesnt work
    2. Type "rd /s" <shortname>.
    3. Say yes to "Are you sure?"

Files should be deleted. Or if that doesnt work, try renaming those files to much shorter names and try deleting them again.

krazy, can you explain your directions more clearer, im a bit confused

  12. krazybll7

    krazybll7 Private E-2

I thought i tried to explain the best i could, so i list it step by step

    1. Open up command prompt. (start menu, then run..., then type cmd)
    2. type in the location, i look at the screenshot and assuming that it is located in the c drive, type in cd c:\musik foldaz
    3. type dir /x
    4. this will give you a list of files, and you want to look for D4L_50~1.mp3
    5. type del /s D4L_50~1.mp3
    5. or type rd /s D4L_50~1.mp3
    6. type y to "Are you sure?"

And again IF that does not work, try renaming the files to something much shorter like D4L.mp3 and try deleting them again.

Try krazybll7's solution from the XP recovery console instead of a command prompt (for step 5, you can also use 'del <full file name>').
You can also use NTFS4DOS on the Ultimate Boot CD to delete the file.

How about trying to over write them by creating a new file and saving it in the same folder with the same name as the ones that won't delete? If that works then you should be able to delete them normaly.

    Dear Blade(etc),

It sounds like Windows has either misidentified the files as "critical system files," or simply cannot see the files, or the folders in which they are contained.

    There is a simple answer.

You must download a free program called, "Delete Doctor." If I am not mistaken, it is available right here on MajorGeeks.

Delete Doctor can remove files, and folders, that are malformed under Windows XP. In other words, a file or folder that generates and error message under XP, to the effect that it cannot be deleted because XP cannot see it, Delete Doctor can find it and remove it. It may require a system restart, but it by golly works!

If I can offer more info, please show some interest.

    Hope this helps!

Ok...well I don't know if you got this fixed yet, but sometimes a 3rd Party Program won't do the trick, try this.

Boot into safe mode as Administrator

Find those files, right click on them, select properties, from there select the 'Security' tab. Now in the top box you should see the following 3 selections:

    'Administrator'
    'All Users' or 'Everyone'
    'Your username'

    Select 'All Users' or 'Everyone'

Now at the bottom half check all the boxes to 'Deny'. Reboot normally and delete away.

    Good Luck!

EDIT: Note, if there isn't a 3rd option for 'All Users' or 'Everyone' on the right side of that tab click 'Add' and scroll down and select it then hit add again.

DarkCypher, it seems your solution did not work but thanks anyways.
    I have tried:
    Pocket Killbox
    Delete Doctor
    Unlocker
    MoveonBoot
    hijackthis

all from normal and safe mode, but to no avail

I will try plastidust's and erikske's solutions, hope those might work.

But what exactly does the Ultimate Boot cd do?

Not sure if this will help, but you have already tried most of the stuff, so far, with no success. I haven't tried it, so no guarantees, but it should work, in theory., so here goes.

1.Write down the full XP paths of the file/s that you cannot delete, and keep it handy
2.Create, using a Win98SE OS CD, a bootable CD or floppy.
    3. Download and installDOSbox, http://www.majorgeeks.com/DOSBox_d4381.html
    onto the floppy, or CD.

Who the heck created these files...Bill Gates?

EDIT: You might want to try deleting from recovery console, that is of course provided you have the OS CD.

Nothing. It's just a collection of tools to repair/diagnose/maintain your system. It contains disk tools, memory tools, xp offline password changer (in case you forgot the admin password), disk erasers, partition tools,....
All tools are listed on the homepage, with manual and description.

Try booting to your WinXP CD and deleting the files from the recovery console using similar commands that were listed above by KrazyBll7. There's an app on the web called called 'Delete Files On Reboot' which does exactly what says, try to find it, download it, and give it a shot. If you have a 2nd PC or access to friends PC, try slaving your hard drive and booting into the 2nd PC's windows and deleting the files from there. Lastly: go to www.UBCD4win.com and follow the instructions to download and burn to CD the UBCD4win (UltimateBootCD). It'll boot into a windows-type environment that runs exclusively from the CD. You should be able to delete the stubborn files from there because none of the programs on your hard drive are running: it's all running from the CD. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
