    Hello,

    I am running a laptop with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73GHz, 1734 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

And two 500 GB disks in a raid 1 configuration

The operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

I’m connected by cable to a server running SBS 2003

So everything should be lightening fast.

Why then when opening a Word document from a local disk does it take an age to open?

I had the same problem some years ago and a tech guy said it was because I had some setting incorrectly set so that it caused he operating system to look in the wrong place first for the file and only as the final operation look at the local storage. Does this ring true and if so how do I correct the fault?

    Any response will be appreciated.

Does it open slowly in safe mode? Are you opening the document through explorer, or through word? If word is open, does opening the file still take awhile?

Thanks for such a swift response Theefool.

Does it open slowly in safe mode?
I have not tried that and can’t do that at the moment. I will check tomorrow.

Are you opening the document through explorer, or through word?
Both – same response – but it varies. I have just tried opening a series of files from Word both off the local disk and off the server.
Off the local disk some files take almost 20 seconds to open while others open immediately. These are single page letters – small files. I can’t see any obvious content that would slow down the opening.

Off the server same result. Some open instantly some very slowly

It appears that all the files in a particular folder will open in the same way either fast or slow. But if I copy a slow opening file into a folder with fast opening files it will still open slowly. Similarly a fast opening file from a fast opening folder when copied into a slow opening folder will still open instantly

I have just opened a Word document from a slow opening folder and RE-SAVED it to a fast opening folder – no change it still opens slowly

If word is open, does opening the file still take awhile?
It makes no difference. Word opens instantly the file will open either slowly or quickly whichever set it belongs to

So it looks as though it’s something to do with the individual Word files that is causing the problem. I may be in the wrong forum!
