I'm on a college campus that is continuously closing ports for fileshare programs. Is there a way to find alternative ports through which the data can be sent, and if so, how do I make use of it?

There's always a way around things. In this case though, ask yourself if it is worth getting kicked out of school just to have the latest mp3. Being in college myself, I know how much money you probably don't have :D, but it's better to not rock the boat with the RIAA watching and with the big bust done recently by Ashcroft and his crew.

You could always make it "run on port 80" which they cant ban, but thats still breakin tha rules!! ;)
