Anybody anticipating this game with me? It seems simply amazing, I've pre-ordered it, they say it'll be released on the 28th to North America but it will be in stores by the 29th.

    The official site is: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml

And you can get the benchmark (The second one) here: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/multimedia/download/bench/index.html

I'm buying 256 DDR RAM and a new graphics card just for this game, weehee I'm so giddy.

    Only about 100 hours left.

24 of which are in school.

I think it stinks this game is multiplayer only and no single player..

    I won't be buying it.

    Well,...

The Final Fantasy series is the most widely known RPG series in North America. I guess they thought starting an MMORPG mgiht make them even more widely known. Plus, I'm sure it'll help them financially but damn, however, those servers cost a lot to host.

I Don't know...but....the game looks nice, especially in High Resolution.

Ugh, they just delayed the game,...evil....

That was just so mean, I've been waiting for about 6 months...
Then they just toss back the due date, like the game isn't complete...Pssht, suuuure!

So how is it? Suitable for a casual player or for a powergamer? Solo or group-centric? Lag? Bugs?

    So how is it?

--Great, quite a bit of content, similar to EQ, but with Final Fantasy elements (characters, spells, limit breaks (called Tactical points in this game). PvP will be added next year.

Suitable for a casual player or for a powergamer?

--Both. There is no rush in this game. You will find yourself levelling several times (each job( thf, blm whm, war, mnk) you choose, you have to start at level 1. Levels go to 70. At l;evel 30, you can open the advanced classes (ranger, ninja, samuari, etc). At level 18, you can get a license to ride Chocobos :D

    Solo or group-centric? Lag? Bugs?

Group friendly, experience is best from level 1-10 solo. This game is not for soloers.

Lag is little to none. Im sure its there, but they hide it very well. I had my first lag last night in 3 days of playing, and it was my net connection going down. Even 56k is lag free.

    Bugs--

Mipmapping doesnt work, FSAA doesn't work (but isnt really needed, there arent a lot of jaggies at all, none in some cases with the graphics jacked up). I've heard this game doesnt and cannot support fsaa anyway.

    Hope this helps.

I have been playing FFXI for a week. It is fun, but not a long term game for me. Graphics are great, lag is non-existant with my setup and cable.
The game moves slowly, lots of things to do like crafting and fishing. Combat skills are all about setup and items, not realtime movement or tactics. There is some skill in choosing what to use against a given enemy and when to use it, but not much variation.
If you want a relaxing game while you have minor things to do around the house this is it. You have to rest to regain health or mana and that means sitting almost as much as you are fighting. Great for saving bandwidth, but makes for slower game play.
If you want fast game play, this ain't it. If you wnat a fully developed environment with plenty of depth FFXI is for you.
A word to the wise - death has an exp penalty. Party up or stick, to easy monsters. You will level much faster killing monsters that give low XP than killing high XP monsters and dying every 15 minutes.

Just to clear up some misconceptions:

There are plenty of call for tactics in the game, you just won't understand that until you get into a good group (and get to a higher level). For example, the Thief has a positional attack that, when done properly, will shift the monster's aggro onto someone other than the Thief. This is very handy for shifting aggro from one tank to another tank. There are many other situations as well.

That is what the White Mage (healing) and the Red Mage (mana regen) are for. Lots of action and very little downtime in the proper group.

The game in the beginning as a solo character is a far cry from what the game evolves into when you include group dynamics. Skill chains (when several members of the group chain their attacks together in perfect timing) are quite important and powerful. Understanding the elements of nature and the phases of the moon, plus the day of the week can make quite the difference in your battle tactics and effectiveness.

It really is quite a good game and worth checking out if you like MMORPGs. It is a lot deeper than it appears, that is for sure.

I have one problem with the game. A thief/ranger can get 400 000 gil in one day. I have 20 gil currently on me. Anybody see something wrong with that? There are certain monsters which are drop, but drop rare items such as rabbit charm or Leaping lizzard boots (or something). The thief has a greater chance of treasure drops and a ranger can scout areas without moving for the monster.

Basically, the economy is seriously messed up. I don't find it fun being poor while other players have to make no effort to just become 100000x richer than me, heh.

Hmm, currently I've put down about 9 days of real lime time into the game and have accumlated 23 levels... Pretty slow =/

I also have another disadvantage, my school gives a bit extra homework compared to others which gives me about half as much free time. Most of my friends have about 18 days of game time. That puts me far back =/

    new to MMORPG

I just bought the game...this will be my first MMORPG (I'm used to old school games like Dragon Warrior and early FF games). I'm taking my time to read the manual before I actually install it but are there any general suggestions that can be made on how to get the most out of this game? -Any ideas are welcome.
    Thanks,

    Check out Mining.

You can pull in quite a bit of gil.

The economy doesn't kill me as much as the quests that have uneccessary time constraints.

I really did not enjoy wasting 5 hours of my life to get my chocobo license...

    Fiver:

Yep, don't let anyone tell you what to play, play what you deem is fun. Make sure you keep signet at all times, and sell your stacks of crystal (stacks of 12) at the Auction House.

Buy armor, and weapons only when you need it, so you don't go broke.

Always check monsters before attacking (ctrl-c). Anything above decent challenge, there is a pretty fair chance you are gonna eat dirt, which costs dearly in this game. If you are a whm, fighting anything is likely to net you some dirt time, so, beware ;)

You will level fastest level 1-10 solo.

Don't be afraid to yell for help if you are in trouble (/h)

    hmmmm.. this game sounds fun.
    What's the monthly cost?
If I get my raise, I might be in a better position to enjoy some more games again!

Which is ridiculous, but anyway... ;)

eeks.. seems like the going rate these days.
I'm actually glad my wife accidentally tossed out disc 1 and 2 of Planetside.. it too was 13 bux a month. She inadvertantly saved me money. lol.

Gotta take down my cc after the christmas spree and maybe I'll consider it, but it probably won't be til damn near august. Se la vie.

I am scared to install this game

as this will be my first MMORPG -should I just install it and sign up -this is not only my first MMORPG but also my first game that has a subscription fee *yikes*! -so should I read the instruction book a few more times (which doesn't really teach me much) or just jump in and learn as I go?
I'm hoping one of you regular users of MMORPGs will remember being a newb and direct me accordingly.
    Thanks,
    522.
The disks are just sitting there begging me to install them! But I will be strong (if neccesary) and hold off untill I am ready.

Read the manual while you are patching, because after the painful registration and install process, you have an hour, maybe more worth of patches waiting for you.

And thats if you have a 1.5 down connection speed.

But then I patched on like the second day of the US launch, so it may be faster.

I do hear people complaining about making money (gil) in this game. My first character is a level 14 Warrior. I do not level fast, in fact I am moving so slow I'm getting bored of hunting at the moment. I currently have over 50k gil in my pocket and that is after buying full sets of armor and weapons. I always buy the best I can get for my character as soon as he can equip them. I always sell the old equipment and usually make my money back on them too.

The key is to have signet on when hunting (to get crystals to drop) and play every job up to level 5 or 10 if you can. You can make a lot of money selling stacks of what you loot. Also, be smart. Look at what sells in the Auction Houses and find ways to get them for cheaper. For example, find the store that sells scrolls/weapons/armor/etc. Compare the prices with the auction house. Find a good profit maker and become a middle-man. Many people don't bother to find shops and just buy from the auction house.

Also, you can make a second character (for $1.00 more per month) and start them in a different city than your first. You can find price differences between two cities and make a nice profit that way. You can send items to your other character at no cost, just talk to one of the NPCs near the auction houses.

Many city-specific quest items are more valuable in other cities. Do the quest and send the item to your character in the other city. Put it in the auction house and profit.

Making gil in this game is not hard at all, it just takes a little foot work and some planning. There are some ideas for you to get started.

    Think things are slow Jamiko?

Wait till the 5 hour long Chocobo quest ;)

    5 hours.

Yes, I am aware of that one. My brother did it recently. He did other stuff away from the computer and just left the game going and popped in once and a while to feed the chocobo.

The game does have time sinks. Level to 18, get subjob. Level subjob to 15. Get level 18 to 30. Get advanced job and start at 0 again. Ugh. Regardless, I am finding ways to enjoy myself in the game.

Re: Final Fantasy XI cheats and exploits?

My friend was over the other day, and I showed him <removed>It is a site with cheats, bugs, dupes, etc for final fantasy xi. He told me it was against the rules for ffxi to do this. Is this true? I am used to cheating on video games for my whole life, so I was sort of shocked to hear this.

    Yep, against the rules.

    Frowned on here.

Its not a game if you have a 'win' button.

At any rate, this post is too old to be dredging back up.
