I've been looking for a 2 gig+ file, on my laptop, that I think relates to a Russian verson (RU) of an *exe, *dll file, or whatever.

I have an aversion to programs that install 20 or 30 language files of other than English, when a simple question sub-routine in the program (Select a language ..., etc.) could reduce the size of the program substantially.

Google to the rescue again. :major
Searched on sort files to descending size "windows 7"
    122,000 links. :-D

The one that took my eye.
I'm a firm believer in the Pareto principle where, for example, 80% of computer programs used regularly, are the same 20% of the programs installed.
Or 80% of the carpet walked on, is the same 20% of carpet area, etc., so install carpet tiles instead. :-D, instead of carpet.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle, or http://www.answers.com/topic/pareto-principle for more background info.

The Pareto principle (or 80/20 rule) applies to just about any field of endeavour, or analysis.
I will be trying this program to find the offending file, over the next week, and will report back.

Hi oma. I already have TreeSize Free installed on my laptop. :)
I haven't explored it's menu much, but I don't think it will list files sizes in descending file size, irrespective of Folder size/Directory.

AFAIK, it will only sort to size within Folder, so if anyone can point out what I might have missed I would be greatful.

A couple of quotes. My emphasis.

This could be exactly what I am after.

Very pleased with the SearchMyFiles program that I installed today. It will search on just about any criteria, or combination of criteria.
I've found lots of files relating to different countries languages that I don't think I need.

One disclaimer, if you use this program to delete files, make sure you have a backup of the program in which the file/s is/are to be found. Just to be sure. ;)

I've attached 4 screen prints, 1 of the Search criteria options available and 2 of my searches on *.lng and *.lang, for languages.
Most of which I will not require. I think all I need is English-US, so really have no need for other country languages.

The search also found a file (for OpenOffice) remindine me that I no longer need OO, so I can save an extra 130+ megs by un-installing OO.
I know that FREE disk space is not as important, with capacities over 1 terabyte nowadays, but I like to delete unnecessary stuff (to me anyhow).

    4½ out of 5 from me.:major

Thanks for the opinions guys. :)

I thought the find the 10 largest file script ran way to slow to be practical. I still like spacesniffer or WinDirStat for that type information.

I run spacesniffer every couple months on my drives to see if I downloaded large files and never tried them. I usually find Linux ISOs or other ISOs I thought about putting into my rescue CD collection but never burned. That is the one casualty of having large HDs these days less imperative to keep them clean and organized.

The SearchMyFiles seems like a comprehensive interface for the Windows search and gives plenty of ways to narrow your search. It doesn't have an option to find the ten largest files per drive but if you put in something like "At least 200mb" it will find the largest files per drive much quicker than the ten largest script (by about two minutes by my estimate). As a stand-alone program it is definitely something to keep around when looking for something specific or when you want a detailed view of files in a folder.

As a newby just jumping in, I found WinDirStat's straight forward numerical ordering of files from large to small the most useful information (opened sub-folders also are listed l-to-sm).

I'm sure the color graphics convey additional information to more experienced users....but not me (at this point)

Spacesniffer's graphics are also not-so-useful for newbies....

    "spacesniffer or WinDirStat"
