Finding a Driver for download

    Hi,

I'm looking for a driver for the DVD Rom. The specs are as follows:

    Atapi CD-RW 52x24
    Super Multi LG DVD Writer
    Model: GSA-H55N
    ROM v. 1.05

I've been searching for a couple of hours and all I can find are those 'driver find and download' utilities, even at Atapi's site. I don't want any of that software, just the driver to download.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might look?

    Many thanks in advance..

Drivers are all supplied by MS, maybe uninstall your current driver and let your OS reinstall it with a reboot. What are your issues?

    Hi augiedoggie,

    Thank's for your quick response!

Other than having experienced a dense moment, I don't have any issues, I did a clean install of the O/S the other day and, just replaced my DVD ROM hardware for which I didn't have the driver. Once I put on a semi-thinking cap, I found the driver on the manufacturer's site here: http://www.lg.com/ca_en/support/pro...documents&targetPage=support-product-profile# (in case anyone else might be looking for it)

I did do an auto-update for MS to see if it would detect that the driver needed to be installed but it didn't. I will go and explore the MS site as I have no idea where the drivers are parked there and I now have to install one for the scanner.

Thanks much for your help 'Smart One!'!

I've never seen an optical device need anything other than a standard Windows OS which should suffice as the driver is built in, no need to go to MS unless you're running something very old which I doubt. The page you linked me to is not a driver but a firmware update.

Now, this updates a chip on the drive itself and unless you know you need it by reading the changelog to open up a new ability like burning double-sided DVD's etc., then don't touch it. You said you had no issues so there's no point in upgrading the firmware. You could make a good paperweight out of your drive if you screw up or the power goes out.;)

Please don't call me that, the title was given to me for a non-technical reason that an admin here thought funny.;)

    Hi

What Windows version did you re-install and also its Service Pack?

Like Augie, I know the drivers in the main are supplied by the Windows operating system, so can you use your CDROM ok ( I would guess yes as you re-installed Windows)?

Most issues in drivers come from not installing the Chipset driver for a particular motheboard or PC if its an OEM like HP, DELL etc, so could you let us know what devices in Device Manager have yellow ! marks by them?

May also be a good idea to run the guide I typed up a while back thats below and attach the log as this can give us alot of info about hardware.

    Hi augiedoggie

Was just teasing as I found the name amusing and, I guess "augiedoggie" is too..heh! Hang onto both those names :p

What happened was that I replaced the old, failed, DVD drive with an unused one. There were questions marks displayed for this new device in the Device Manager and, an advisory that the device drivers were not installed. In the end, firmware or driver, I went back to MS auto updating again and everything worked out fine - installation all done without errors.

    Hi Halo

I formatted the drive and installed XP Pro SP1 from the CD. I then downloaded all the updates up to SP3. The XP CD ROM would not have worked because everything on it is older than the updated files in the newer service packs (I had this prob before). Just prior to the re-install, the motherboard, power supply and harddrive were replaced. The new harddrive had a copy of XP temporarily loaded, which was not mine...hence, the re-install of my own copy which is the pro v. unlike the one temporarily installed (I did not have my discs with me when I was ravishing the machine) - it is a custom build with an intel board.

My issue now is that the DVD drive is displaying as "OK" in Device Manager. When I put a disc in it, the light flickers for 5 secs then goes out and nothing happens. Do I need to download codecs or something?

    Thanks guys,

    ~ Blu

    Hi

Good on the drive now displaying, now try THIS and delete the upper and lower filters, and see if that helps.

Codecs allow various audio and video formats to work, so if your trying a film disk then try normal data disk first to see if you can access it before installing a codec pack, dont want to mask a problem if codecs are not the issue.

    Hi Halo,

Thanks for your response. I followed the steps which you suggested on the linked page - didn't work. In the Device Manager, I can see the DVD ROM but not the CD ROM. However, neither work other than to flash the green light for a few secs before it goes out. The CD ROM did work for a quick few minutes yesterday though *sigh*. I will check in services now to see if something is turned off. Any other suggestions you guys have would be appreciated.

    Hi

If you have both a DVDROM and CDROM in the PC, then unplug one of them and see if the other works, if it does then do check if using IDE ribbon cables that the cable is not damaged (change if you have a new spare one) and check the jumpers on the back of the drives, one should be Master and one Slave (can use Cable Select *CS* too but I prefer Master / Slave)

    Hi

Great stuff, Halo my slide a touch now and again, but cheers for the update and if your dont need the CD drive and the DVD will do then great leave as is, but if you neeed the CD then do check the jumpers on the back (guide here and covers all thats needed, you dont need to have a HP PC, its same for all) but what you may also find is you dont have enough power to run both in your PC.
