Finding bus speed in a text file of my dad's system

Hi. I was playing around on my dad's laptop (Avaretec 4100 Series) and wanted to investigate upgrading his RAM to make it a bit faster--it's 512 MB now. I myself have just increased my memory on my Dell Desktop and so, having the experience of ...ONE TIME...(;)), I told my dad confidently that I might be able to help the slow pace of his computer--so I emailed a file from his computer that was a system summary of his hardware and told him I would have to look into whether or not he should upgrade or just buy a new laptop.
I sent myself this text file so I could look up some stuff about his computer and then go back and impress him by spouting off all this "easily obtained" and "everyone knows that" comments:
But alas, even the simplest of skills is beyond me since I am not even able to find out the size (?) or type of bus memory he has. I ask myself: Is all memory shaped the same or is it proprietary or OS-specific? I am told that there are indeed different types, not necessarily proprietary but quite possibly different from the memory in this old computer I have lying around my house that I was going to give to my dad--again, to impress him!
    SO LONG STORY SHORT...........
Can anyone tell me the possibilities of upgrading my dad's memory from this system readout of his computer?

    Thanks ever,

    Arrogantly ignorant but loyal daughter

PS I also included his info in the attached file with a lot cut out to fit the size restrictions for this post.

Re: What type of mem card do I upgrade with?

Hi Catherine, I would use his laptop to go to a website called www.crucial.com. When you're there just click on the "scan my system" button and they will tell you exactly what kind of memory you need and the price. It will also tell you the number of slots you have available and total amount of memory your father's system is able to support. You can either purchase it from them, microcenter, or www.newegg.com is a good place also. One more thing, I'm not saying more memory will speed up his machine. There are many other things that could be causing his machine to run slow. Good luck to you.

    Hi

One of the quickest and accurate ways is to run the scanner at Crucial memory HERE, you dont have to buy from them but the info it gives is good and its one I use all the time (also do buy from crucial at times as they maybe cheaper)

According to your report, you have 1GB of ram in that PC in Dimm slots 0 and Dimm 2

    One is Samsung M3 68L6423ETN-CB3 PC2700 (166 MHz)
    Other is Centon Electronics IITCX8SVB 512MB PC2100 (133 MHz)

although you have a faster ram chip in that PC at PC2700 it will only be ruuning at PC2100 speed of the 2nd chip as ram will only run at the speed of the slowest chip of same type.

Its not OS specific, however ram is shaped differently, they have different pin lapouts depening on the type of ram and yours is DDR (Double Data Rate) and there is a graphic on that page further down that shows you the difference from DDR to DDR2 and DDR3, their are other types of ram for laptops and an older type called RDRAM that have differeing pin layouts,

But you need to only deal with DDR and Laptop ram types as in many laptops the ram size is half that of the ram modules fro desktops, so using the Crucial scan or taking say the Samsung reference code about that will get you the same ram as already inside.

But do check on how much ram the OS is reporting as from your report you have 1024mb which is 1GB, in XP right click MY Computer and choose properties and that should in the box that tells you what OS your using should also tell you waht CPU speed and how much ram is installed.

EDIT: Merged two threads on same topic together, so my comment on Crucial is already mentioned earlier.

Wow! Very helpful! And I am very grateful! Now on to impress my dad! Hmmm...first let me re-read your replies so that I will be even more of an expert THAN I ALREADY WAS! LOL!

    Seriously, thank you so much!
