He was fired for not going along with the program. Everyone at that school wanted to apologize for what happened, he didn't and was vocal about it. Maybe it was an overreaction, but that's why this happened.

Apologize for what? Having a better team? I can't blame the coach for being outspoken about it. He undoubtly worked hard to create a winning team and now he's been fired for not apologizing.... for winning? Worse yet, what are we teaching our children? We keep telling our children to do their best, and then when they do, they have to apologize for it? I don't think so.

In American football, basketball and maybe other sports, if the team is way ahead, they will stop pressing. One reason is to avoid injury and the other is to be a good sportsman and not humiliate others. What that team/coach did was ugly. Even some of the players thought so too.
I am not against competition, I don't think everyone should be a winner. I am just not to crazy about humiliating others and being ugly about it.

That's a disgraceful how they would fire him for such a petty reason. The coach said it best himself "We played the game as it was meant to be played. My values and my beliefs would not allow me to run up the score on any opponent, and it will not allow me to apologize for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity."

So many haters out there. He built a good team he deserves to be acknowledged positively, not to be fired and looked down on.

oh wow... 100-0 is pretty bad. comes a point where you just stop trying. i think the coach of the winning team should have let up a bit. but firing him over this is ridiculous.

The losing school specializes in teaching under-developed children and had not won a game in 4 years.
At the beginning of the 4th period the winning team was up (I think) 81-0. Coach was pressing his players to make more 3 point shots instead of playing defense on both sides of the court, which is how a lead is normally preserved. Running out the clock....

All they wanted was for him to go along with the apology from the winning schools administrators. He defiantly refused. That's why he was fired. For not showing some form of regret. He actually thinks humiliating a weak opponent is building character.

I've seen my kids look from both sides of humiliation in sports. The looks were the same. There is nothing respectable in what he did.

Thanks Evilfantasy, I did not realize that the losing school was one for under developed children. That puts a totally different spin on my opinion and, I have to admit, I feel somewhat like an ***. But that's my own fault for not getting ALL the facts before setting my fingers in motion. I was wrong and, knowing what I know now, yes I agree that the coach should have been removed. It appears that the kids from the winning school had more honor, integrity and good sportmanship then their coach. Thanks again Evilfantasy for pointing that out, it was much appreicated!!

I will have to tread very lightly here. Help me out, can the losing team 'throw in the towel' so to speak? Can the losing team, say they are at 81 to 0 at the half time, can't they forfeit?

This seems like a really botched job of scheduling. I don't think these 2 teams should have met on the court.

Should we teach kids in sports to intentionally not make shots? If I am not too removed from high school basketball, you have to shoot after so many seconds or you are penalized for it. If they shot, and made it...

Good teams don't train to fail.

I would blame this travisty on the people who made the schedule.

Though I still side with the losers in this case, Fred_G made a valid point that those 2 teams should have never met in the first place. The 'fired' coach knew what kind of team he was going up against and, now this may sound alittle like cheating, but would it have hurt for the winning coach to let the under developed kids score a few points? If for no other reason than to make the less advantaged retain a little pride. After all, this isn't the Super Bowl or anything and sometimes it doesn't hurt to 'swallow some pride' to make someone else feel better about themselves. I think that if that would have happened, this thread would not even have seen the light of day!

There are loads of schools out there who every year face that one team who just can't win. They don't do that to them. They run the clock out by NOT shooting until the last few seconds. Running down a clock 24 seconds at a time is a very effective weapon. The pro teams do it every night.

Do you train youth boxers to fight to the death? As a parent do you humiliate your kids at scrabble or touch football or whatever just because you can?

Again. All they wanted was for him to go along with the apology from the winning schools administrators. He defiantly refused.
