Firefox 1.0 and SpywareBlaster 3.2 problem

Every time I open SpywareBlaster, it tells me that in Firefox, "209 items have protection disabled." If I "enable all protection" for Firefox, the main Status window shows "0 items disabled," but if I close SB and re-open it, it shows "209 items have protection disabled" again.

I've Googled and checked settings, and can't figure out why SB's protections aren't (apparently) holding in Firefox.

Oh yeah. I have a backup machine that is configured exactly the same way as the main machine, but it has Firefox 1.0 Preview Release still, not Firefox 1.0. It has no problem with SB, but the versions of SB are the same and the browser-internal settings are the same.

Probably something simple that I've missed. Anybody have a clue?

(P4 3GHz, 1G DDR, two WD HDD w/90%+ of space left on both.)

One more thing: I've tried wiping all traces of SB from this machine and rebooting and then re-installing. No joy at all. "209 items have protection disabled."

Just because this is a silly mistake I made... Have you clicked the link in "Protection" called "Enable all protection" ? I missed that one, and went in to each section and enabled all protection manually and sometimes missed something...

This is very strange, I've never had a problem with Spywareblaster and Firefox! I've only installed them on 2 machines, but still..

Thanks, Solange, but yes. And I've even gone to the list for FF and Selected All, and Enabled Protection for Selected, too. But close and open again, and "209 ..."

I've sent a report to bugreports at javacoolsoftware. I found this on their forums from last year:

When I opened SB it shows for Firefox "207 items have protection unenabled", I enable all protections and it then shows zero disabled, I close SB and then reopen: it shows 207 disabled again.

    Javacool's response:
    Well that's odd.

Can you please send the following files to bugreports@javacoolsoftware.com :
    -profiles.ini (Should be under <user profile>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox)
-hostperm.1 (From each profile location referenced in that profiles.ini file - they should be under <user profile>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles)

Also, could you please check those hostperm.1 files for odd permissions, such as read-only?

I checked 'em and I sent 'em. We'll see.

    Wisewiz,

How are you my friend? I came across this, you may have seen it but wanted to make sure.

    Hi,

If you remove any items under the Mozilla/Firefox "image blocking" options, it should work, however I'm working on a complete fix for the next version of SpywareBlaster.

(On the latest Firefox, this should be under Tools>Options..., the "Web Features" tab, and then the "Exceptions" button next to "Load Images".)

    Best regards,

    Thanks Javacool!

I had already solved it, I think, with another method. I got the name of hostperm.1 from your forum, and I've written to you to tell you how I used that info.

Once I knew who the "usual suspects" were (from your response to Anyname in the Forum), I opened the hostperm.1 file and found that SpywareBlaster had apparently not written anything to it, although it IS writeable. I made a backup copy, then wiped the original except for the first two lines, saved the virtually empty file, and ran SpywareBlaster twice. The first time, it showed the usual "209 items ...," but the second time it (finally) showed "0 items ..." Yea!

I then pasted the original contents (from my backup copy) back into the file after the SpywareBlaster content, and saved this version. Spyware Blaster remains happy. We'll see now what happens when the next new data file is added to Spyware Blaster. Will it write, or not?

    Waiting and optimistic,
