I have been using FF for about a month now and ever since last week it started crashing. Sometimes the crashes were preceeded by an error message, but in most cases the browser just crashes w/o any warning. I posted about this at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=486368&highlight= and have had 34 views but no one is answering my question. I was wondering if anyone here had a clue as to why this may be happening. I know you guys seem to prefer FF over IE but right now IE isn't crashing unexpectedly and I can use it headache free.

Go to control panel / admin tools / event viewer and under system or applications you should see the errors associated with the crashes ...post the error codes.

No that wont help much with Firefox, not when IE dont crash. Focus on Firefox and the announcement post you missed on the other forum ;) http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=106431 or in other words create new profile, included in standard diagnostics http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_(Firefox) Problem probably go away but also take a look at plugins which are not part of profile.

If you for some reason dont want to make new profile disable extensions 1 by 1 until crashing stops. Some extensions are known to cause trouble, most will be fixed through updates. Some should not be mixed. Here is a list of old problems http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions but there is more. Sometimes files in profile can get corrupted so best to just make new and see what happens. Be careful about what you install.

Error console in tools menu might give a hint about where to look.

I am still having the problem with FireFox 2.0 just ending itself, I did everything you said about creating a new account and I don't have any extra extensions or themes for it besides the standard ones that are needed. Is there anything else that could help me out with using it? I am getting to the point that I don't want to use FireFox because the crashes are annoying!

That Firefox help forum is extremely busy, sometimes topics fall though the cracks - if not answered within a few hours, they can easily drop to the 2nd or 3rd page. Nobody would mind if you "bumped" your topic by posting your own reply, even if all it said was "bump" or "still having problem" - any activity on the thread would move it back to the top. Just don't do it too often, but after 24 hrs or so... in this case, it's been almost a month, you should have followed it up a long time ago. You should post again, and include information on what fixes you've tried - that is, if you still can't fix it.

I had a similar problem for weeks before discovering that Java Runtime was causing the crashes. If you are running JRE 5.9, I'd recommend that you download and install JRE update 5.10 and after the installation, uninstall the 5.9 version. Worked for me.

Great advise from both Greenknight and Blueheeler a simple "Bump" posted to your thread works wonders at times, just don't do it in our "Malware Thread". The gang at FF forums are usually really good, and normally there advise is second to none...........and yes there are known problem with FF2 and Old Java. You can get Java 5.10 here at MG link http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html Hope that Helps

I have downloaded the runtime 10 and deleted the runtime 9, it's still crashing but I have posted again asking for a response on my issue at FireFoxs' support forum. Thanks for the help :D

My new version of firefox was crashing every time I opened a webpage that had flash player (.swf) files that would try to autoplay advertisement stuff.

I posted a question about it here a week ago and got no replies, found some stuff on google shortly after my post and sort of fixed it (or at least jury rigged it) myself.

I downloaded a firefox plugin (mediaconnectivity) that at least allowed me to shut off the autoload of flash files and now have no more crashes. This was pretty easy to do. I have tried to download flash player and plug ins to get the flash files to run , but to no avail.

any clues on my problem? Seems to be a new problem with the latest version of firefox. maybe they will have a fix for it in the next rev.

I'm not 100% sure but I have heard more than a handful of people complaining about it crashing. I have done everything in their web forum instructions, like you said to no avail, and it doesn't always happen when .swf is present. I've been posting in a forum like this and it crashes, I've yet to notice a pattern with how it crashes. I like the browser ok but not enough to be frustrated over and over with it just cutting off while I'm in the middle of something. Even though I can bring it back up most the time to the last page I was on, I lose any text that I had been typing.

one thing that works playing (not streaming) is the "fast video downoader" plugin, works with all FF versions. it downloads the file directly to you harddisk. i suggest using K-lite codec pack (this site) to play the files, or a codec pack that supports .flv files.

Thats weird, i've been using Firfox 2 for a while now and i haven't had any crashes... however everytime windows isn't shut down properly i lose all my bookmarks and history, is this supposed to happen?

Not supposed to happen, but it's a common problem. It's best to always close Firefox before you close Windows, but just in case you should back up your Firefox profile. See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup

if all else fails i'd switch back to FF 1.5 or go to this site lolifox.com and download that, it is equivalent to FF 2.0 and is compatible with all the same plugins and even comes with some extra features like a spell check, you can still even import from IE or FF if i remember right. I kid you not lolifox seems faster, and has better pic support. here's a puny example, my dial up connection with FF would download at about 1.5 kps (sad i know) with no other online activity, lolifox would download at 2.5-2.8 kps (where blazing now XD). I strongly recommend downloading lolifox at http://lolifox.com/download/

Spell Check is not an extra feature, Firefox 2 has that. Since Lolifox is apparently compiled from the Firefox 2 code, I seriously doubt it would solve your crashing problem.

They have updated Firefox to 2.0.0.1 and since the update it hasn't crashed so I guess all's well that ends well ;)

Excellent to hear! They (mozilla) did fix quite a few (100+ issues) within firefox.
