    However, I do not think some of the choices of boxes to tic or not can be known intuitively.
    Privacy particularly, is not clear to me. Can you give me an idea of what the average user should select, or not, in this category?

    I can't advise you on that, however the first image below will show you what my settings are.
    Note that you have to select Use custom settings for history to make any of these adjustments.

    You can also Clear selected private data/History from the Tools menu:
    Clear Recent History... which provides the dialog box shown in the second image.

    One option that I didn't mention that you might consider is to set Cookies to
    Keep until: | I close Firefox

    This will cause your cookies to be deleted when you close the browser.
