Firefox about:config

There was a long page I found on every single entry (1.5, but still applicable), but I can't seem to find it now. The Tweakguides guide is especially helpful.
Any other links to Mozillazine might take forever to load. Just keep refreshing.

 

I don't change anything. FF seems a-ok to me, at its default settings in the config area.

 

I find that changing the network settings makes it run much faster. Or just have FireTune do it for you.

 

Or get Fasterfox.

 

I used to experiment with K-meleons About:config
PAINFULLY at first, after using K-meleon, I switched to FireFox.
First I dove into the about:config because I didn't like the options panel...Didn't seem enough.
I found that the default settings were indeed quite adequate and have only changed a few things.
Even with FasterFox I have heard that some internet providers don't like it, seems they say it is an internet hogger. this I can't say forsure.
I have now fully switched to FF2.0 (k-meleon As my second, IE as 3rd browser) and the ony complaint is the buttons. FireFox 2.0 doesnt have an email button! Seems to me, I shouldn't need yahoo tool bar to go to my mail. every thing else is sweet as is.
I would say if you want to play with about:config download K-meleon browser, it is fast. Has the (more or less) same config as fire fox but more options in the options area. of course this doesnt include addons, but haha, k-meleon comes with some of the addons included......and they work better!
never hurts to try, as an example I set up my K-meleon (FF lil Bro) the same as FF...Smokin fast...haha, that was on a 266 Pentium!

When i installed FF2.0 i went to the addons so i could get FasterFox back but it says its not compatible with FF2.0. I only use a few of these configs. Only the ones i think are helpful. I did like the ram one where you can change the max depending on how much ram you have.

 

there is a way for faster fox under 2.0

apparently a silly text file, or some code to make it work only before 2.0, has been written.THIS IS NOT Fire fox approved...but it workes...if not post back

 

or here, set to open w/ ff2.0. if it doesnt work at first, save to HD, then drag it onto your addon for ff. should be done....worked for me

Careful when configuring FasterFox, though. You can get banned from sites because you're hogging bandwidth.

Only 1 setting in Fasterfox should be disabled. Enhanced Prefetching - author just says it is up to server adm. to prevent if too much, hence the warnings. Besides that it has a nice GUI with all settings making a difference, some more than others. Also let you go back to Firefox defaults which is nice. Do that before uninstalling. Be careful with his presets, make your own.

There are no new connection "tweaks" for 2.0 compared to 1.5.x.x so Fasterfox should work 100%.

More convinient to write entries into user.js as some of the linked guides must show. Rename/edit/delete file and you are back to default values. Easier to make and forget mistakes in about:config.

About:config has a setting which globally allow old extensions extensions.checkCompatibility set it to false and Firefox accepts anything. If really old and no sign of activity best to check for alternative extension. There have been many updates lately, check add-on site and website of extension.
