I have a problem with Firefox 1.0.7 crashing on start-up. Literally.

That's what the error message says in part I get when this happens. I have done a search of this site, but have found no answer already posted for this problem. BUT, I have tried to get an answer elsewhere, and nothing came up, except "I am getting it, too."

The error message?: "It seems Firefox is crashing on start up..." is the part of the error message I remember (all too well) and asks me whether I want to continue or not. I usually press the "Continue" button, and can get Firefox to start.

    What gives?

You might have to make a new profile for that switch - which you will do soon anyway. Final 1.5 out shortly - RC3 is same as final so go ahead. Start up Firefox like this "firefox -p" then you get profile manager. Some extensions might need updating to be compatible with 1.5. Almost all worth using allready are. You could also wipe out profile folders but remember to backup bookmarks.html and what other files you want to keep for new 1.5. Profile folders is located as shown here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder#Where_is_my_profile_folder.3F Starting all over is easiest and 1.5 will work for sure.

If want to save many passwords dont delete "signons.txt". Cookie permissions and more is in "hostperm.1" Bookmarks.html again. If you have modified user.js and userchrome.css they should be backed up as well. Rest not important.

I dont remember how 1.07 uninstall, give you option of killing profile folder or just do it automatically? Anyway, very useful to know this profile setup - FF program folder is of little importance.

  4. My easy answer to this one.... reinstall firefox. If it is still giving it to you when you uninstall firefox again, clean out any remnants of the program, then install it again.

The first thing you should try is a new Firefox profile. The majority of problems are in the profile, and it is not changed by re-installing the program. Follow Bambo's instructions for opening the Profile Manager, create a new profile, and try launching Firefox with this clean profile. If the problem doesn't occur with the new profile, transfer your bookmarks and other browsing data from your previous profile to the new one. Good step-by-step instructions here: http://the-edmeister.home.comcast.net/tips-html/tips-restoring_your_browsing_data.html

If a new profile doesn't help, then try re-installing. If a normal re-install into the same directory doesn't fix it, to a clean install by first completely removing all components of Firefox, as described here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_firefox

Please...be patient! I have just been reading the whole thread again...my screen name is "Truth in Advertising", so I need to read a lot of this stuff more than once to "get" it. (Old people like me need to go to bed...not try to fix Firefox at a late hour, which was when I got back to this thread last night.) Believe me, I appreciate the help so far, and would try to carry out the suggestion(s)...but the computer is at home, and I am not! And, I don't want to say something stupid. Or, lie about it.

I'll get on task once I get home, and let you know what happens this evening

  9. I was getting at the fact you reinstall firefox but clean up any remmnats of the program ie delete leftover folders and whatnot. Then you install again.

I did the uninstall and reinstall of Firefox 1.0.7 tonight. So far, so good.

However, if it does it again...out FF 1.0.7 goes, and in goes FF 1.5!
