I opened Firefox today and a dialogue box came up to say there was an update. I agreed to the update. It then said Firefox was updating then after that nothing happened. Firefox is no longer on my taskbar. Firefox is no longer on the Start menu. On my hard-drive there is Mozilla Firefox folder but I cannot find in it an application file that would allow me to (1) run Firefox and (2) pin it to the Start menu and Taskbar.

In an attempt to resolve this problem I ran System Restore. In fact, I ran it twice because after the first one it said it had failed to restore my PC to an earlier state. The second attempt, choosing a different restore point, also failed.

I am aware that a quick fix would be to simply use an uninstaller to uninstall Firefox. I could then download Firefox anew from Mozilla. However, that would result in me losing the Bookmarks I have spent a long time building up. Therefore, I would be most grateful for any help with this problem that means I can keep my Bookmarks.

Not so. Your bookmarks and other FF settings are held in your profile which is not stored in Program Files. Read this -
