Firefox hogging my entire system

This has only been happening to me since firefox was updated to the newest release yesterday. I don't know if it's a problem with the new release, or if it's something else on my computer causing the problem.

But firefox is consistently using CPU in the 90% range. Especially if I've got more than one tab open. It hangs, takes 3 minutes to switch between tabs, and slows everything else on my computer down to a crawl whenever it's open. I am not experiencing this problem with IE - but I don't like or trust IE so I'd rather fix the problem with firefox.

I looked around on the mozilla help boards - but nothing I found made any sense. I always understand what YOU are suggesting I do, however. So I figured I should come here.

Any ideas of what I can do to fix this? I really don't want to have to resort to using IE to browse.

Hehe, I love your alias, I'm from Quebec. I just installed the updates and all is fine with 12 tabs open, actually using 40MB less than before the update. Sorry I can't help you.

Thanks! I really REALLY love Quebec. If my French wasn't so atrocious I'd move to Montreal in a heartbeat. It's so much nicer than Toronto.

it's okay. hopefully someone will have some suggestions for me. this is seriously making me crazy.

I just read that sometimes firefox and webroot spysweeper aren't very good friends - so I uninstalled spysweeper (my subscription was expiring tomorrow anyway) but that didn't make any difference.

Unistalled and reinstalled adobe flash. No help.

Uninstalled all of the firefox plugins I was using (well, there were only three). No difference.

Next I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling Java - but I can't see that making any difference, either.

Since V2 of FF extensions are notorious for hogging the CPU. Try disabling these in this order (if you have any of them installed), one at a time, to see if any make the difference:

    Fasterfox (ironic huh?)
    AdBlock
    G.FilterSet
    iMacros
    FireFTP
    ForecastFox
    Mouseless Browsing
    StumbleUpon

If none of those make a difference, try disabling javascript and see if that does (do this by Tools > Options > Content menus). Of course this would be a PITA as many websites require it, but it helps you eliminate what the problem might be caused by.

Edit: I see your post below..you must have been doing most of my suggestions as I typed ;) Try the javascript disabling (not uninstall/reinstall) and let me know how you get on

I do remember flash sites did a number on FF last year, 1.5xxx IIRC after 3 or 4 hours it would be up to 700MB out of my 1GB RAM and I'd have to shut it down to recover the memory as the system was unusable. everyone told me I was basically nuts, this was with no add-ins etc., straight out of the 'box'.

yep, disabling javascript solved my problem. although - I suppose it's not really solved at all since I kinda -need- the javascript.

Is there an alternative browser to Firefox I can use? I am really unwilling to go back to IE.

Yeah, the only add-ons I was using were the one to check gmail, the one that let me view videos (youtube, etc), and, um. So shameful. The Neopets toolbar.

Yes, that is the draw back of that solution. You can re-enable javascript and selectively disable it using the NoScript addon from here http://noscript.net/ or this https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1237

Also make sure you are running the latest version of Java 6 Update 2 http://majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html If you are not, then uninstall old version using Add/Remove Programs via the Control Panel, rebooting, and then install latest version.

Another great browser if you decide not to use FF is Opera which you can download here http://majorgeeks.com/download559.html and has all the whistles and bells.

I uninstalled Java (though add/remove) already, rebooted, got the latest version , yadda yadda yadda. Still the same problems.

I think I'm going to get Opera. Thanks for the tip!
