I have attached a JPEG image of my browser's homepage. I have highlighted (not very well) in red an area on the browser homepage. The highlighted area was not there ten minutes ago.

Where can it have come from? I've not updated Mozilla Firefox and did not add any tools bars.

More important question: how do I get rid of it?

    Thanks

I think you'll find that's part of the Google home page, and you can't get rid of it. The only way I can see that it wasn't there '10 minutes ago' is if you had the page scrolled down slightly or the page hadn't loaded properly).:)

It definitely was not there before! I have been using Firefox 3 for a long time and it has never been there before. I know. I'm not getting dementia.

You'll also find it is not there when you're not on the Google home page. :)
if you mean it was never on the Google home page before, you must have had a corrupted site, I guess. That bar has always been there as far as I can remember.
Note: It's nothing to do with Firefox.

    Hi

I believe it was a simple coding change on Google's end, as you're right -- that menu bar did NOT appear on the Firefox/Google start page before (though it did appear on www.google.com). I'm guessing a coding change is now causing it to appear on any personalized Google-based start pages.

Apparently everyone else missed the simple fact that this wasn't www.google.com.

In FF4 change your homepage to about:home and youll get the google/mozilla home, which does not have the toolbar .
    www.google.com has the toolbar .

I accept that this is the normal Google homepage. I cannot understand why I've never had it before.

Based on the jpg in your first post, you should upgrade to FF4 . It is quite a bit different from earlier versions, I'd have to say probably the biggest departure in form factor they have ever done, and it took a few days for me to get used to it. Although they re-arranged the top tool bar(s) you can change them back the way you want to, it is fully customizable, I just put the home page button back where it used to be . I find it to be a good browser, noticeably faster than previous versions, and quite safe and fast if you use NoScript (i don't) and AdBlocker plus (I do). Give it a shot ! you can always go back to previous version if you dont like it . Nobody is being forced on to it (yet).

And btw, if you DONT want to move to FF4, I'd try changing your homepage back Tools>Options>General> click restore to default , or try changing to about:home .
