In firefox, I click tools>options>privacy . In the location bar area at the bottom of the privacy section, where it says "When using the location bar, suggest : "
I prefer the setting to be on "nothing", but every single time I close all instances of firefox, and then re-open firefox, it resets itself to "History and Bookmarks" instead of "nothing" . This just started happening today . I have done no settings changes (other than repeatedly changing the aforementioned back to "nothing" a dozen times today, and have had no firefox updates today.
I hope i'm just really tired and I'm missing something obvious, but for the life of me i cant figure out why this setting keeps changing itself.
    :confused

    Hello,
    You can try these:

    Open the about:config page and

set the value of browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to –1

set the value of browser.urlbar.matchonlytyped to False

set the value of places.frecency.unvisitedBookmarkBonus and places.frecency.bookmarkVisitBonus to zero.

    I don't see a browser.urlbar.matchonlytyped . I see browser.urlbar.match.title, match.url, and matchBehavior only, and none of those three have a boolean value .
I did find browser.urlbar.maxRichResults, the other entries I found no problem. Since I could not find browser.urlbar.matchonlytyped, I did not change any values.
Advise ? i notice that browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled boolean value changes when i change the menu item from history & bookmarks to nothing .
(a double check confirms that there is no browser.urlbar.matchonlytyped entry)

browser.urlbar.matchonlytyped is not officially supported by Mozilla and was changed to browser.urlbar.restrict.typed. Sorry about that. Here is the article referenced for that matchonlytyped key. I do not think the value for this can be changed: Check here for a very good description on the values. Even though it is for 3.5 it works for 3.6

    urlbar.maxRichResults to –1
Takes you back to the way it was in Firefox 2. I would recommend you do this first and see how it works.

Then set the values of set the value of places.frecency.unvisitedBookmarkBonus and places.frecency.bookmarkVisitBonus to zero.

    That is normal.

I just set keyword.enabled to false, but still getting history & bookmarks everytime i restart. I just find it distracting and annoying to have things popping up in my face while im typing in the url bar. I will now try urlbar.maxRichResults to –1 and see how that goes.

I tried your suggestion, urlbar.maxRichResults to –1 . It was set to 12 . The other two values were 140 and 75, respectively. Still the same thing. I dont understand why all of a sudden yesterday this problem surfaced. I have band practice in a little while, I'll run Avira while im gone, and then SAS and MBAM when i get back. I dont think this is a malware issue, but theres no harm in running a scan while im not around anyway. I'll do some more research when i get back. Thanks for the assist !

Something obvious, but I still forget at times. When you set it to nothing, are you remebering to click ok before you close the window?

    browser.history_expire_days
the default is 180 days; it used to be 90. You can lower that to 1 and it won't see much history, if that's your preference.

You can't do much about bookmarks.

Yes i do click OK, yet everytime I restart FF it reverts back to History & Bookmarks.
It is just an annoyance that magically appeared yesterday, I want it gone the same way I turn off GOOGLE INSTANT. I don't need nor want suggestions distracting me while im typing things into search bars or my url entries .
    GAH !
    :mad

Im almost tempted to do a reinstall of FF and see what happens .

If i cant find the solution by the end of the day today, I am going to do a reinstall . This is driving me batty - not so much the problem, but the fact that I cant find the answer !

    /me still researching

Reinstall did not fix the issue. Guess I'll just have to learn to live with it, like the doctors started telling me as i got older. "Doc my knee hurts." "yeah, well you're getting old. learn to live with it"
    bah ! :banghead

If the extension doesn't work then you may try creating a new profile. This link isn't exactly your problem but gives some information.

I would get MozBackup and backup my current FF profile. Create a new profile, import all my settings from MozBackup and see if the Location bar worked properly after a couple of restarts. If it did and my new profile worked well then I would delete the corrupted profile.

Thanks tgell. Although the addon doesn't stop the changing of url bar setting, it does prevent things from popping up on me when im typing in the url bar, so it's a valid workaround . Strange how these new developments seem to be disliked by enough people that someone comes up with a patch to work around them. What's the deal with google and firefox making changes that people clearly dont like - just google "I hate google instant" and see how many complaints there are ! About 4,500,000 results (0.17 seconds)
    Dear GOOGLE and FIREFOX :
    Cut it out !

Thanks sach2, but with this addon, FF is now behaving in an acceptable manner for me.
