    This just started to happen:

Whenever i open up Firefox, i get a small window saying FF is already running but is not responding and says that i have to close the Firefox process or reboot.

I don't have FF open nor does it work if i reboot. I tried uninstalling FF and re-installing but still no luck.

    Little help please?

    Thanks.

Try checking the Task Manager to see if there is a Firefox process running. If running 2000 or XP, right-click on an empty space on the Taskbar and choose 'Task Manager' and then look for firefox.exe. If you find it, close it by highlighting it and choosing 'End process' and then try again to start Firefox. If you're running 98 or 98SE, press and hold Ctrl and Alt keys and then add the Delete key - release all and you should get the Task Manager up. Highlight firefox.exe if it's there and then click on 'End Task'.

Just because you can't see evidence of something running, doesn't mean it isn't. From time to time I have to take this approach on my email program.

Even if you get success at getting Firefox started by doing this, I am guessing that something more is wrong and you will probably have this problem again. Post back and someone more knowledgeable about Firefox should be able to help you troubleshoot that.

Someone, please help as i hate using IE!!!:)

Since no-one else seems to be responding at the moment, I did some more poking around for you. Try this page http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/ and type firefox "already running" into the search box. The top reasons seem to be related to the profile or to Java. Have a poke around there and see if any of those help you.

Again... thanks for the advice and research. I have now reviewed it and tried several of their suggestions (using an old profile, redirecting, etc.) and still get the same error message. :cry

If you have any other thoughts i'm game. Otherwise, I'll see if i can contact Mozilla somehow.

    Thanks,

Did you just look on the applications page, or did you go to processes? Just double checking, because this happens to me on a somewhat regular basis (the exact message) and it's always because Firefox is open on the Processes page. Good luck.

Yup, went to both places. Have just finally got it solved following the suggestions on the Firefox forum pages (didn't realize they had them).

Thanks to all for the help!

Does it fix it for good? If so, do you have a link? I'd a permanent fix.

    thx

What turned out to be the cause? It's always good to have the info here in case someone else gets the same problem. And I'm curious anyway! :)

The link to the Firefox forum is:

    http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38

(and by the way, its a pretty lame forum design. Ex.: There is no search feature or anything on the page with the people's posts. You have to enter a search query from the first page.) You'd think that a major company/browser would be a little more current.

Here is the thread i found and following it finally got my re-install to 'take'. Previous times, i just kept getting the same error window. I'm not positive, but i think it was just removing the firefox folders and not touching the profile folder, and then it replaces it with a new one. A little confusing to me, because i thought that's what i did, but maybe i was removing to much and not letting the software do its job (i'm not referring to the add/remove program process).

I found this link for uninstalling Firefox and it worked for me. Again, it seemed like i already did what it asked, but maybe i missed something or did it in the wrong order. Nonetheless, i'm back in action. Thanks!

Not true. The search is always available, it's in the sidebar on the right. It's not always visible, sometimes you have to side-scroll to see it.

That is really bizarre. I swear, the search feature and links were not there yesterday and only only on the sections page. I did scroll left, right up down for it since i was wondering where it was. Odd. But i apologize for mis-posting.

So you were actually trying a reinstall when you started having the problem?

I guess that's different than mine. Once and a while I'll try to open firefox and it gives me that message.

Ah well...thanks for the link anyway. Guess it's not a big deal to close the application.
