Firefox Patch

Got a pop up to install a firefox patch.
I investigated and learned it is bogus. I followed that and found some postings on the net about removing the (jps ?) program.
Pulled up a couple to see what is involved in such action, only to get another popup, this time from Malware that those sites had been blocked.

They're coming to get me, he he,ho ho, they're coming to get me, you know, you know, they're coming to get me.

Hi. Do you think you are infected? If so please head to the Malware forum and go through the Read and Run Me First sticky and post logs. If you have a question, you'll have to be more clear.

Firefox definitely doesn't have pop ups for updates.

If there is an infection, it is doing a great job of hiding.
I just might run the program you suggest. Nothing to lose

The only place a user should go to check for a Firefox update is Help > About Firefox.
No where else. The place to set what updates are allowed is Tools > Options > Advanced > Update

Anything else is a scam pop up.

With the exception of the default installed option 'hidden' under a button marked Options, which does periodically check for updates and does popup an alert, the current Options window (below) is relatively new but the update check via a Service has been around for quite some time :

    Tools > Options > Advanced > Update
    These are the settings:
    Untitled.jpg

The other image is the standard install options from a new set up file. I have never seen that window appear in a standard inbuilt update and I've been using FX for donkeys years.

Your image is obviously a post-install screenshot of one specific subset of checked options, mine is of the standard Firefox stub installer after clicking the Options button from the initial screen.

Is obviously incorrect and has been so for years.

In an existing installation of Firefox a version update doesn't involve a set up file. The OP refers to an update of an existing installation.
We don't know what the pop up was that the OP got.

Maybe not in the way you have it setup, there are alternative options, as indicated above.

    Not at all.
The window you uploaded is the 'custom install' window when installing Firefox as a new install from a standard set up file. So it is 'hidden' but not from an existing installation. It doesn't even show - and all those options are pre installed - if the user chooses the standard install.
Not remotely relevant to the OP's post in seeing a pop up relating to an existing installation.

Maybe you should test the range of options available for yourself before making such outlandish claims.

The window image you uploaded is a set up file custom install window. It's not a pop up. It doesn't appear out of the blue.
    Have a lovely Sunday.

The image I uploaded is an example of the variations possible, and does include an option where a popup occurs, usually around three days after a new Firefox release, from the time the Firefox update servers go into push mode.

It's not an example of an update window.

Well spotted, now turn your attention to the fact that it offers multiple options, one of which, as I've previously stated, will result in a popup ~three days after a new Firefox release.

I guess that's the lazy way out, saves you having to find out for yourself.

    Some facts:
    1. Your image upload wasn't and never ever is any part of any update - you know that but seem unable to accept it.
    2. There are no pop ups used to alert a user to Firefox updates, ever.
    3. This is an example of what the OP probably saw and the answer given post #4 was the only correct one.

I'm not a frequent FireFox user. I have an older install left over from trying it out. Also have a few boot drives and PE installs that carry FireFox as the installed browser. Since these have been around my desk for awhile they are naturally behind the current version. I notice when using these boots and PE's that I do get a pop-up for updating to a newer version. Since they're running in memory I don't even worry. But this thread brings up the question - So - are these the real pop ups from mozzy to get out the updated version or a pretty good looking trick?

This thread is old and probably settled but Firefox does NOT use pop ups for updates. Ever. And that image is not a pop up. Your image is what appears when a user has updates set to automatic and when you launch an out of date Fx version.

I just opened Firefox 45.0.1 and there was no pop-up.
Then I clicked Help > About and here are the screenshots.

Mine came over the page while reading Google News. If that's not a pop up ---

It isn't a pop up. It's an auto update window. You can check for yourself in Tools > Options > Advanced.

Well this is a different kettle of fish.
Google checking your browser's version is one thing, but telling you there's a Security Update... I have never seen anything like this.

It's not a google window, it is an official Firefox update window.

I just turned on Update, restarted Firefox and opened Google. The only notification I got was at the bottom right.

I was just reading a news story. Got done. And went back to the main news feed page. And then this (the first pic). Then I closed the browser back to the desktop and it was still there (the second pic). Next time I crank up a boot, I'll follow to just see where it goes.

If Firefox is set to auto-update, then the window you posted an image of will come up at some point after launch. Not necessarily immediately.
IT IS NOT A POP UP!

Google, like many other websites including banking sites, do recognise an out of date browser version. But that is nothing to do with Firefox's own update system.

Maybe the term is misused. Here's from techtarget def.-

A pop-up is a graphical user interface ( GUI ) display area, usually a small window, that suddenly appears ("pops up") in the foreground of the visual interface. Pop-ups can be initiated by a single or double mouse click or rollover (sometimes called a mouseover), and also possibly by voice command or can simply be timed to occur. A pop-up window must be smaller than the background window or interface; otherwise, it's a replacement interface.

And I just got it. The same as Imandy Mann.
Isn't the latest version Firefox 50.1.0?

The window you posted, and Eldon's, is part of Firefox's official update process. It is that simple. It isn't a pop up within an external website.

Yeah I saw the 50.x.x as the latest also. But since I don't normally use FireFox, I didn't know if updates had to be done in stages like how some Windows kb's won't install until you have a previous needed kb installed. One of the points that made me curious. Then I remembered seeing in here about no FF pop-ups so I wondered - is it a trick? So I guess it's not a trick and it is their real notification---(popup)?lol

    Guess it's a pop-in!

There is no such thing. It's an official Fx update window.
There have been malicious pop ups that suggest a Fx update but lead a user elsewhere, and appear on other program sites as well. And I linked to that many many posts ago for people to look back at. That is malware and doesn't look anything like a Firefox update window.
