FireFox: Searching from URL bar

Having a problem with FF. The behavior for FF has always been that when you type something into the URL bar, eg "the white house," it would automatically search and send you to the proper URL in most cases. I'm running the latest version on multiple computers, but on my main home computer this no longer functions properly. I get an "Invalid URL" box when I try. Is there some setting that may have been changed?
