I started checking on my Firefox and it is slower than usual, in addition I noticed that it has taken up much much more memory than it usual does. Even with multiple tabs I would check it once in a while and it still didn't run at this speed with this amount of memory usage. I don't have any dl or any new programs running in the background according to my task manager. Any solutions?

Try clearing your cache and turning off automatic checks for updates.

Do you keep Firefox open for long periods of time? A bug in the current version is memory usage increasing the longer the browser is kept open. If you minimize for 2 seconds the mem usage drops back to initial levels.

i know this is going to sound dumb, but i don't get what the answer is. my pc has been getting progressively slower despite my going through the whole spyware cleaning routine advised on this site. i searched "running slower" and saw firefox thread after firefox thread. i cleared all my saved info (cache, cookies etc) and shut off the auto update feature. it seems a little better but the difference is slight enuf that it could be my imagination. so i started firefox in safe mode and it came up just as slowly. so.........what's my answer? or do you only get one if firefox is quicker in safe mode?

Make a new profile and see what happens. Best and fastest way of troubleshooting extensions. You can have 45 installed, all is fine but with just 1 conflict anything can happen. Conflicts are quite common, to find out try search extension forum at www.mozillazine.org may be also http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/ Very important to keep them updated.

Put user_pref("config.trim_on_minimize", true); in user.js to let FF clear most memory when minimized. I guess default is false, not sure though. Wont hurt to have it in user.js http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/edit

You can grab latest "aviary" versions of FF here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/tinderbox-builds/sweetlou-aviary1.0.1/ might make you feel better at least ;) 1.04 is almost identical to official, 1.05 has some modifications, see Mozillazine for details. Both what you could call "stable", not like 1.1.

A new profile is the right idea, but there are a couple things should be said about re-installing extensions. 1. Install one at a time, and test after each one. 2. Only install those you really use. The fewer you have, the less chance of conflicts or corruption.
