I checked Firefox (FF) today to see if there was an update available. Whenever I’ve checked FF before if an update is available it gives the version number. Today, when I checked it says, “Update to Partner Removal”, (see attached image). I’ve not updated because I don’t know what this means. Can anyone please explain what this means and what will happen if I do update?

Seems to be an Acer version. I would remove it and install the Mozilla version.

Thanks for the info. I'll change to the Mozilla version. Thank you for the required link.

Today, I went to remove the Acer version of FF. I used Revo uninstaller but found the version of FF installed is Mozilla's. So, I haven't uninstalled it because if I do have Mozilla's version there seems no point. Although I export them to my desktop to copy to any new version of FF, I also don't run the risk of losing my Bookmarks.

I attach a screenshot of what I saw on Revo.

Any opinions, ideas, advice, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Back up your bookmarks!
I do this about monthly in FF and archive the backup on a USB stick.

Speaking of FF updates... I used FF with three different profiles. In the past, when I see a new version here, I'd do a manual check on my browser (hamburger-> Help -> About Firefox) and regardless of which instance (profile) I check from - it would say "Firefox is being updated by another instance".

I have a choice then of either closing two of the three profiles - and then FF will auto update the remaining one (the other two would be updated upon reopening) - or just wait a day (two at the most) and FF will auto update all three open profiles on its own, without my intervention. Works, but kinda strange.

I do back up my bookmarks. I was asking if I should go ahead and follow the advice in post #2 as it seems I do have Mozilla's version of FF rather than Acer's. Belarc Advisor confirms I have Mozilla’s version.

Screenshot_20230112_111502.png The picture you posted very clearly identifies it as an Acer version. A plain Mozilla version does not identify your system in any way. Here is mine.

I have removed Acer FF and installed Mozilla FF.

I have, as far as I can, set it with all my preferences. However, there is one I obviously can't remember. When I'm typing in the search bar I don't want web addresses appearing in the address bar. Nothing I have changed is stopping this from happening. What setting do I need to change?

I'm sure someone will correct me but I don't think you can stop it, but the drop downs will vary with the selected search engine.

It's not my history that's the problem. I have that set to never remember. Therefore, I don't get previous searches recommended.

What's happening is as I type something, websites' URLs start to appear in the address bar. I wouldn't mind as much if their suggestions were helpful.

I'm certain you can stop it. This is a new PC and it didn't happen on my old one. However, just had an idea. It doesn't happen on my laptop so I'll look at my settings on there. I should've thought of that sooner but had an accident before Xmas and I'm on a very strong painkiller so my brain isn't firing on all cylinders.

Preferences --> Search --> uncheck 'Provide search suggestions'.

Thank you! I have just tried that but FF keeps overriding my choice. I went nto Settins --> Search. 'Provide search suggestions' was unchecked. However, a sub-option, 'Show search suggestions ahead of browising history in address bar results', was checked. It was faded out and would not let me click on it. So I clicked on 'Provide search suggestions'. That unchecked the sub-option mentioned above. Then I unchecked 'Provide search suggestions'. However, when I try and do another search I find the problem persists and when I go into settings the sub-option, 'Show search suggestions ahead of browising history in address bar results', was checked again.

Did you close the browser after you made the changes?
Did you empty the browser cache?

I've never had the (dis)pleasure of encountering the above. Click here for Firefox solutions that may help.

Yes, to both and FF still reverts back to the sub-option I don't want.

Thanks, I shall have a look at that link.

I just checked and I have this set to false
    1. Type in
    Code:
    about:config
    2. In the Search Preference name, type the following
    Code:
    browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled
Yours is probably set to true. Set it to false and see if it is what you want.
If it isn't, you can always undo what you just did.

I am posting this for the benefit of others reading this thread. Today, there was an update offered on FF on my laptop. It was the same as the one I encountered that made me start this thread. This time I decided to go with the offered update: "Update to Partner Removal". I now wish I'd done that on my desktop and I wouldn't have had to (1) remove the Acer version of FF, (2) download and install Mozilla's version and (3) try and remember my preferred settings.

I ran "Update to Partner Removal". It was quick, too quick I thought, so I checked again for updates and it was offering Mozilla FF 108.0.2. I ran that update so now have Mozilla Firefox 108.0.2 on my laptop with all my preferred settings.

"Update to Partner Removal" obviously does what it says on the tin. It's removed the version installed by the computer manufacturer and replaced it with Mozilla's version.
