Actually like wandar I would like to hear some positive opinions as to why I should try FF and not just the IE is poo and lets in spyware or FF is betteR!! [sic]

I generally use Opera, but still have IE on one PC and its never had a spyware problem, safe-ish surfing and the restraint not to click every damm thing in sight that says "Click Me" ;) I guess.

so come on guys convince WandaR and me to try FF...

sorry for the hijack WandaR :D

It renders pages faster, I have yet to come across a pop up that evades it's pop up blocker (unlike IE's), I have never had it hijacked, it is not capable of scripting executable code, and therefore is not subject to the type of security problems which would allow malicious websites to take over your computer or install viruses.

Oh yeah, and Internet Explorer's rendering engine is an ancient piece of crap, Firefox is compatable with pages designed for Internet Explorer's proprietary HTML extensions, but Internet Explorer doesn't even have full support for CSS or XHTML, if anything is dragging down innovation on the Internet, it's Microsoft for digging in it's heels and taking a "not invented here" attitude about anything they don't have a patent on.

Well beyond being faster than IE has ever been..........................

Small download 4.7megs. Friendly even to dialup users. :)
    Tabbed Browsing
    No popups
A multitude of very usefull & fun Extentions.
    A nice Support Forum.
The community as a whole helps to keep bugs to a minimum & what ones do pop up, don't last too long.

    Cons?.............................
    Some sites no worky. :(

Firefox doesn't use Active-X, which is the biggest security flaw IE has (among the many others). Active-X is how the majority of spyware automatically installs with IE, that in itself is enough reason to use Firefox.

IE is the target of virus' and spyware simply because it is so widely used, the simple fact that Firefox is more obscure makes it safer.

Firefox is EXTREMELY customizable with hundreds of extensions and skins.

    :)

Wanda, just go to this site and proceed as noted. http://www.mozilla.org/. As far as IE is concerned. I just ignore it on my comp and make FF my defualt browser. BTW it took my son quite awhile to convince me FF is better than IE in most all respects. I can't understand why it took me so long to see it. Happy browsing.

It's okay, she asked a good question, and I actually pasted a bunch of the answers in Word and saved them for later use. :) Don't discourage folks from wanting to learn, even folks that have been here forever like reading these so we can learn even more! :)

But I do agree, I wish we had some of these types of questions (Best Antivirus, best Spyware detector, Best Browser, etc) on an educational thread somewhere, where folks could start, get some basics, and then come get some details in the rest of the forums. Kind of a 411/101 type of forum, mostly just information, to let beginners get their feet wet.

But, it's hard, there is so much to learn and know. Guess we'll all just hang out and answer questions as best we can, and together we'll find the best answers, hopefully! :)

Just to point out.....quitting using IE is not enough. If you switch from IE to Firefox or any other browser, first be sure to jack up your IE Security and Privacy Options to the maximum setting. Or just go to advanced options and disable everything. You don't have to be using IE for it to attract all sorts of trouble, I found that out the hard way.

I agree with you Eric, maybe we could have a board where we could all discuss our experiences with various software.............Yeah I know that we have a software board but I'm not talking about software problems but software [or hardware maybe] experiences

    Thanks, above, there, Prince.

The best thing in my opinion is that its the beginning of taking back the web.
    hehe.
If this keeps up, more people get FF, then even those lamer wannabe web scriptors who work for banks will somehow be able to fit it into their pitiful brains how to write code that is compliant with W3C standards.

After all, no matter what Microsoft thinks (or at least acts like), they do NOT dictate the standards of the InterNet.

    So, take back the web...
Me, the first bank I find that doesn't pull this "you must use IE crap"... I'm switching to them.

It all depends on whether people, as individuals, have any respect for HTML, XHTML, CSS standards.

If they don't, then maybe they should just go ahead and use IE.

I had some problems with IE a while ago, some of the stuff I've been doing for years didn't work any more. Above all, I had a problem with a Java chat that is almost an extension of my living room...

A friend told me to fgs start using Firefox instead, and I reluctantly agreed (tried opera a few years ago and didn't like it at all). I couldn't believe how easy it was to get used to Firefox! I didn't have to learn a lot to begin with, just start use it and learn more functions over time.

One of the best things about FF is the tabbed browsing, you don't end up with 100 open browser windows, you have them all in one. I have broadband, but for those with modem, this must be heaven, as you can just open all links you want to view, and read the first while the rest loads!

Some of the extensions caused FF to crash A LOT for me in the beginning. I was furious, when it crashed right after I'd spent half an hour writing an email, before I hit "send". But I've updated the extensions, and now I haven't crashed in a month.

Some of the extensions do great things, small stuff, things you've been annoyed at in IE. Rightclick an image online and you get the option "copy image location" (no more go to properties and copy url). And if you copy a link, you have the option "paste and go", saves you to hit enter... Etc. Small stuff, but useful.

I still use IE for minor FTP work, if I want to transfer just one or 2 images to my webhost. The one in FF is great, but better if you have multiple files in different locations, not so good for just one single file.

And I use IE for Windows Update, MS doesn't seem to approve of FF! :p

I don't think FF loads pages as fast as IE though...

Need more? Or can I officially apply as a salesperson for FF? :D

Its a no brainer,I cannot understand why anyone would keep using IE.Perhaps they like ads and spyware.

I use IE on one machine and have not had spyware or a virus on that PC, its not the fact people like spyware or ads on their pc, its more a case of not fully understanding the issue of securing a pc for todays internet, many users are oblivious to the threats these days and plug there new pc into the net and within a few hours... its going slow, it has popups, p*rn pages, dialers etc

There are no warnings and not much advice from pc manufacturers or retailers* on how to keep your pc safe, you buy the box with pre-installed software, yes great they bundle alot with AntiVirus apps but not much else apart from the junk apps you have to remove because you will never use them. They should now IMO be installing AntiSpyware programs as a matter of course as well as having a small printed booklet or section in the users manual on the threat of spyware and the internet.

Unless you are geeky minded or a small interest in computers, you won't know about the dangers lurking on the internet, thats why you see the Spyware sections of message boards full of "help me I have spyware" So its not that people want spyware its just they are not informed.

*Apart from the retailer my sister bought a new laptop from today, the guy ok wanted to link sell McAfee Internet Suite but he did tell her about further protection if shes going onto the internet, ( Spam, Spyware, Popups, Trojans etc ) if only more retailers where like this the average buyer would be more informed. Needless to say she has me to install the free apps from MGs which do the job just as good if not better than the retail software.

Thanks to the peeps above who gave a detailed critique on why move to FF, Suesman you never fail in giving a great for & against answer and Solange yes you can be for offical sales person ;) thanks for the answer, maybe I will give FF a go.

Yes, I agree! I've had IE for a long time, and I've felt so safe, with the tools that I have to protect my baby. The reasons why I changed browser was certainly not because I didn't feel safe! You are absolutely right, the biggest problem is lack of information, people don't know what the problem is or how to protect themselves. Many still think that an antivirus program is all that is needed... Firewall, what on earth is that? .....

It would be good if retailers gave out more information. I was stunned when I had to call customer service at my ISP a few weeks ago because they didn't give me the speed I'm paying for, and the person I spoke to actually asked how I was protected! (in the end he had to agree that this baby is like fort knox, and it was highly unlikely the slow speed could have been because of anything nasty... but still!) First time EVER though, that anyone has bothered to talk about anything other than norton antivirus... I wish more people were like that, usually the sales persons have such poor knowledge themselves, they can't give any good advice at all!

Back on topic again, sorry about the rant! :D

Btw, do you think I should claim a commission for my services? :D

    Yes on commision ;)

Its sad that its only the few retailers or customer service agents really have either the knowlege or forethought to ask these questions or offer advice.

back on topic.. well I installed it yesterday and installed a few addons, just a few things to iron out now, stopping it from showing on the guest account and learning it has TABBED BROWSING so must refrain from clicking the close page [x] and closing FF down instead of cloing a single tab

Yes, you have to make sure you get a warning when you try to close multiple tabs. If you got rid of that warning, you can get it back in options in the Tool menu.

Let me know if you want to know what extensions I found useful! :)

You might have to work a little with the settings when it comes to how you want links to open, that was probably my biggest struggle, to keep FF from opening links in my chat window all the time... lol.

I have mine set to open links in a new window, that way I can keep up with what the tabs are being used for. I would get so confused trying to remember what was what & I would end up with a ton of tabs. lol

I use IE for Windoze Update & that's it.
