I was told that because I use a dial up, that I don't need a firewall. How true is this?

mostly true for people trying to target your system specifically, you IP address likely changes each time you dial up. not true for virii or port scanner, they scan chunks of IP addresses. If you have win xp then turn on the built in one. If not then I really wouldn't worry about it unless you're super paranoid. In that case I would recommend getting sygate personal firewall, or the kerio personal firewall.

    Ask yourself this.

How much bandwidth does it take to steal a password, install msblast.exe, or a trojan virus?

Answer: Not enough bandwidth for you to even notice on a 28.8kbps connection.

A friend of mine was infected by msblast on a 19.2kbps connection in under 90 seconds. She connected, she was infected.

    Do you need a firewall?

    Your call.

I'd listen to him if I were you... mainly because he's right.

Thanks Adrynalyne, guess that answers my question. Now which one would be suitable for a dial up?

Listen to what they are saying it is better to have one than not have one.

and to answer to your question
there is not an specific firewall for dialup no matter how you hook up to the internet you will still use the same ports and connections. the following thread will let you in on what I believe are the best ones. The good thing is they are all free
which definately makes them number one in my book. :)

take a look at what kodo posted
