hi there, on my old win98se machine (beloved), i used to run the sygate firewall which was perfect. but since i had to reinstall windows, i can't install sygate anymore and had to revert to filseclab. i use avg free as antivirus-tool.
so everything is fine until i go online (dial-up modem). usually after a few minutes, the screen goes blank and i have to restart windows because even if i manage to get the screen on again (by hitting the enter key), it still shows me as connected to the internet but there is nothing coming in or going out.

is there a known issue of filseclab, maybe not being compatible with avg? i am abroad right now and can't say exactly what version the filseclab is, but the avg is up to date (pre version 8).

i have never had any infections on that pc before.

    thanks for any help.

did you you configure the settings under the rules tab to allow data transfer thru your ISP? I know of no issues with AVG and have run it along with Filseclab with no internet issues. The firewall should prompt you to allow the connection when you first log-on to the internet also Mozilla or IE must be allowed access thru the firewall for data to flow to the browser. Is AVG set to auto-update and is it allowed to connect to the ISP? Try turning off the auto-update feature on AVG and make sure it is allowed access under the rules tab on the firewall.

yes, i have allowed all browsers on my pc, avg is allowed, too. i can surf and do things on the internet just as normal, but only for a few minutes before the thing crashes.

if i am not online everything works ok, even with both filseclab and the avg in the background. i also do not get eny errors or the firewall registering any unusual activity prior to crash. the crash always comes unexpectedly (but now regularly).

i have heard that windows installations get faulty the more often it is being done, is that true? i certainly see things not installing properly, whenever i decide windows needs a reinstall. maybe this has something to do with the fact that i can't install sygate anymore?

    :confused

My recommendation would be to wipe your drive after backing up any files you want to save. DBAN is free and cab loaded on this site to erase previous installs and boot sectors that may remain. Try the fresh install of windows 98 and if you still are having issues look for a driver upgrade on the mobo for the bios and or the modem. 98 got real buggy on me the last time I tried to do an install so I upgraded the mobo and went to XP pro. If you don't have the cash to upgrade get the Ubuntu of Kubuntu software mailed to you for a couple of dollars. Everything will auto-install and linux is not bug-free but is a good work-around for your problem.

    Life's a srange trip indeed!
