firewall question

    Hello all, new arrival here and I seek some input regarding a security issues for this wacky world we call the internet.

    I was wondering if it was suggested to use a alternative firewall instead of the one offered through windows vista? I was going to use one suggested here but thought I'd get some input first.

    Hi

    Personally I tend to use the Windows one but its the Windows 7 built in one thats a bit better than the Vista and XP ones I feel, but I couple this with a router with SPI and NAT, but this really just blocks incoming traffic and you may not know whats leaving or wanting outgoing access, you may wish to monitor what apps are wanting internet access.

    But going this route can take a while to train the apps into what is legit and really does need internet access to those you may not wish to have access the internet, so if you go this route all of the ones in the guide that Kestrel posted above are good and I kinda like Comodo Personal Firewall, I was testing one really small one earlier today before reading your post that basically allows you to control any apps via the Windows firewall, it works but you have to train it fully so you will get many popups in the first few weeks from apps you are using and legit windows files like Windows Update for your input as to "allow" or "block".

    If you wish to try the small one its free also, let me know.

    First I wanna apologize for not using my brain and not taking advantage of the all powerful "search" function prior to post. I did try to delete the post after coming to realization but couldn't figure out how. :)
