I've just bought a new computer running Windows 7. I just tried installing Agnitum Outpost free firewall (which I used on my last PC). It said it only runs on x86 configuration and wouldn't install. Any one please recommend a firewall. At the moment I'm relying on Windows firewall.:eek

Windows firewall is all you really need. A third part firewall is overkill in my opinion.

It is my understanding that Window's firewall is not very good; unless there's been a major improvement with Windows 7.

In what way? Obviously, Windows firewall is turned off when using another firewall.

Depends for me. If you do your banking, or purchase things on line with a credit card you might want the added protection of a third party firewall, I use OnLine Armor for that purpose. on a PC I use only for such purposes. Normally depend on Windows firewall and the additional protection of WiFi protected access on a wireless router. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Online_Armor_Free_d4872.html

I second the opinion of using Comodo Firewall. It's free, secure, and has been working for me for several years without any security issues.

Thanks for the advice. While waiting for replies, because I wanted to be on the net and protected, I have downloaded and installed Agnitum's "Outpost Security Suite 7.1 Free."

In the second link provided by bigbazza (Post #7), this is listed as one of the firewalls which they 'rated'.

I don't want to have to uninstall this program and download and install another if this is OK. I know everyone has their preferences but would appreciate any comments if the one I've chosen has major problems. (I used it on my previous machine and was happy with it.)

As mentioned by Bugballou (Post #5), I do internet banking so obviously want a good firewall.

I would appreciate any more comments or advice.

    Thanks

That firewall will provide decent protection. No firewall is perfect, and if you've been using that program and are happy with it, I see no reason to change.

I prefer Comodo's firewall simply because I've been using it awhile, am familiar with it, it has a good reputation, and the support forum for it has been very helpful (a lot of free programs lack the support that Comodo has through its forums).
