firewall

have a friend that is getting a cable modem and was wondering what is a good easy to use firewall as she does not have a net card and cant go the router route.. She aint puter savy so ease of use is also important.How is Kerio ?

 

kerio is a great personal firewall program. However, it might be a tad too advanced for her. I might recommend Zone Alarm for a new user of firewalls.

Sygate personal is free as kerio & zonealarm, but imho as easy and as advanced as any of the others. Also its more likely to NOT cause major troubles with other software/uninstalling/browsing/etc.
I'd lose the zone from the list of options.

 

I use Outpost. Free, easy to use and a few more more options like AD blocking. I didn't like ZoneAlarm.

she has a store bought puter(make unknown) and is running ME.. Yea I know LOL ..I need the easiest one there is as she lives 2 hours away and if she has to do alot of configuring she will get lost and I wont be there all the time to assist her..Smart gal but technically challenged..

 

I'd say try them both and that her decide...

I am turned off zone alarm for ever. Just went to friends house other day. he couldn't use Internet explorer. but MSN worked. so lo and behold, even though IE was allowed through firewall according to ZA list it would work. but w once i turned of ZA...

 

this seems to be turning into a "my firewalls best" thread.

At risk of joining in, i would say that ZoneAlarm is a bit like AOL, with all this TrueVector stuff sending stats etc. I prefer Sygate.

But ZoneAlarm seems easy enough to set up, and probably easier and more user friendly for newbies

 

yea I decided to go with zone alarm for now for her..It will do for short term till she gets a router..She got a rebate on the modem so I told her that when she gets the rebate check to get a net card and router as she wants to put 2 puters online thru cable modem..And thank all of you for your input.The suggestions and help are much appreciated.
