I wonder of someone could advise me please. I have the MacAfee firewall at present and am thinking of getting something more up to date. I would be grateful for some recommendations please. Many thanks:)

    Welcome to the forum :)

In this list of must have free software applications Majorgeeks ~ Must have free downloads their are a number of Firewalls that are free and do a great job, most of us on Majorgeeks are running one of the treo below.

    Zone Alarm
I still like this one for ease of setup and useage, plus it updates quite frequently

    Outpost
    Sygate Personal

note: only install and run one firewall.

Thank you very much for your advice. I have heard that Zone Alarm is good and easy to use. I would like to hear how others get on with Sygate and Outpost as I have heard good reports about them as well. I need one that is easy to use. many thanks:)

Have been using Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 10.0.0.1 for a few months now and find it to be virtually bulletproof. The program provides 'rock solid' protection along with a superb user interface. Highly recommended.

Thank you for your reply. I am using Mcafee Guardian 3.00. Could I please have some feedback on what you think of this please? I expect it is out of date now and this is why I need to update my firewall. Thank you:)

First off; I no longer use any McAfee products (long unrelated story); so I cannot give a "personal" review.

However I researched this firewall a bit for you and I believe (as you suspected); that it appears to be a bit on the old side. I Googled it and could only find one single reference using the search term McAfee Guardian 3 (which was dated Dec 03) and one non-English reference for McAfee Guardian 3.00 (from mid-2005).

Using the search term "McAfee Guardian" (w/ no version number):
Most review sites regard this as is a “valid program” but it is not required to run on startup. For instance: According to BleepingComputer.com: "This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. The following information is a brief description of what is known about this file."

    Name: McAfee Guardian
    Filename: CMGRDIAN.EXE
    Command: Unknown at this time.
Description: McAfee's QuickClean, an offline version of the one in their online Clinic. Normally run offline and not needed. Incidentally, incorporates more cleanup programs than the likes of WinOptimizer and System Mechanic
    File Location: Unknown
    Startup Type: Currently being identified.

A few other sites had similar results: PCReview.co.uk | AuditMypc.com | WinTasks Process Library

My advice: Use ZoneAlarm Free (it's freeware, very popular and is updated often) and will do the trick! :)

    Good Luck!

Oh anytime, Silverfox... My pleasure, really! I'm so glad the tips offered helped you out here. ;)

I've actually used ZoneAlarm for many years on several different computers and although at first; it can take a little while to learn how to best use it to suit your own individual needs, it's very easy to set-up and is an amazing firewall protection utility, especially considering the price!

The developers of ZoneAlarm also maintain a terrific Zone Labs User Forum that you can visit if you have any questions or need any more specific advice about how to get the most out of it; as well a useful Malware Online Scanner which is free to use as well.

Oh, and I got so wrapped up in researching your post's question I forgot to say "Welcome to Major Geeks!" earlier. Feel free to join in with us; anytime you have any questions or comments about anything you like. There are many people here who are ready, willing and able to help! :)

    Good Luck!
