Is the use of a "firewall" for dial-up ISP needed or useful?
I can't seem to get a solid answer on this.
    Thanks,

For most casual users, such as myself, yes. If you are an expert/power user and know how to configure, monitor, and manage access on your computer, you could get by without one.

Yes.. wouldnt do any harm in installing one, Sasser, Blaster etc etc wouldnt discriminate you on the grounds you had DUN rather than DSL/Cable, plus the added bonus of knowing what software was wanting to access the net is a + point wether you use DUN or not.

I used one for years while on dialup.

DEfinitely use a firewall. I use free version, don't try the Pro version (15 days trial only)

    Zone Alarm http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=744

It will bug you for answers, as to whether it should allow you access various sites, when you first load it. If you allow ZA to access the site and tick the appropriate box, it won't bug you again about that site. If not sure, just allow, or deny, without ticking the box, until you gain more confidence in how it works. Other geeks will recommend other firewalls. Your choice. Bazza
