Hello. I have a Dell Inspiron with an Audigy X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card installed.

When I add my firewire card (FireConnect 4300) to the unused PCI slot, my computer doesn't recognize the card.. it doesn't show up in Device Manager, and I cannot use it.

However, when I take out my sound card, my computer recognizes the firewire card, and it shows up in Device Manager. Then when I put the soundcard back in, the computer no longer recognizes the firewire card.

I tried switching the PCI slots for the cards, but I still have the same issue.

    Any ideas?

What version of Windows are you running? Have you tried running a system info tool like Everest or Unknown Devices or UDI?
    Everest http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
    Unknown Devices http://www.majorgeeks.com/Unknown_Devices_d3908.html
    UDI (Unknown Device Identifier) http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html
I know you said that Windows doesn't recognize the card(s) correctly, but running one of these can tell us if the PC is recognizing the cards correctly, or if they're being recognized at all....

    Thanks!

Should I run these with both cards plugged in?

Oh yeah, and I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1 32bit.

Does it matter which program I download? I'm gonna try Everest first, and I'll let you know what happens.

Ok, so I plugged my sound card and my firewire card in again to test them.

I booted up my computer, and for some reason a keyboard appeared on-screen during log in. rolleyes Weird, I've never seen that before. Any reason this keyboard showed up?

However, I went into Device Manager, and now both my sound card and firewire card are showing up. :confused They're also both showing up in Everest. Are Dells real finicky? I tried moving and removing these cards several times, and each time making sure the card was correctly plugged in.

I'm real confused. I just hope everything keeps working.

Thanks for your help. You'll be sure to see me again. :-D
