First computer build on a budget

I have had a Dell 4700 computer for years. I want to upgrade but it's pretty much upgraded as far as it will go (which was not much to begin with.) I'm trying to put a computer together to build that will be better than my Dell. I'm in a pretty tight budget. I initially wanted to use an i3 processor but this AMD combination is about $100 less. Would someone please tell me if this would be a decent computer and if these parts are compatible? (This is my first time to put together and build my own computer so I may have it all wrong.)

Yes those parts are compatible. I just put that same DVD burner and hard drive in wife's computer no issues. I have used nothing but GSkill memory for the past 5 years and have never had an issue. The last 6 systems I've built for family & friends have all had AMD Phenom X2 or Athlon II X2 CPUs and they run great.

If you have an extra $20 or so, you might want to splurge and upgrade the hard drive to a Western Digital Caviar Black series:

I've found the 32MB cache in the Caviar Black seems to speed things up a bit. The WD also has a 5 year mfr. warranty compared to 3 years on the Hitachi.
