First look at Ubantu

I put the live CD in the drive the other night. In less than 8 mins, I had sound playing and Firefox up and running.

Simply amazingly simple. I did not like the Gnome desktop before, I still do not like it now.

I have a 160 Gig ready to install (had 20 Gig) and then we will see how it works with dual boot Kubantu and XP....

I will post again what I find.

So far I like it from what I saw. And after boot, all back to normal here.

 

I've read good things about Ubantu. Know what you mean about Gnome, I prefer the KDE desktop.

 

KDE reminds me of Windows. Thats why I like Gnome better.

 

Both have their pluses and minuses. I'm used to Gnome; it's the default desktop for RedHat and Fedora. Yeah, KDE looks a lot like Windows and I think that is deliberate.

Last time I actually truly used Linux as my main OS, was Suse 7. some odd version, and I used blackbox.

Now that is minimalist.

 

So you are saying I can live with Gnome given some patience?

I tried it on my laptop (unitwill clone no name)

It hung at casper... so it will have to wait for a full install try. I have a 160 Gig drive and I will mirror the laptop and then do an install, I will post what I find.

It may be a few weeks out though.

 

GNome is the default desktop, you can change which desktop you use at the login screen.

 

I am not sure if that will work with the Live CD. I was going to be doing some community service work tomorrow, but now see rain may force me inside to play with this.

Oh and I ditched the Compaq 166 I had, never could get it to regonize memory past the 16K that was in it. I did get a 5 Gig drive for my son-in-law to destroy....
