first PC build problem.

Hi,

I wasn't sure what topic to put this under. This is basically my first build
MOBO: ABIT KN8 SLI
CPU: AMD 64 X2 4200
GFX: evga e-GeForce 7800 GT

The problem is I used the HD from my other PC as master and at start up windows wont load. The windows load screen comes up for less than half a second the machine restarts, it cant start in safe mode either. The same HD starts fine in the other PC

I'm trying get any hint as to what is wrong from the manuals, have'nt found out.
Any help appreciated.

Does that drive have the old install of XP or the operating system on it?

IF so then..... you'll really need to clean install that drive from your old PC as it will have all the hardware drivers from your old PC on it.. as XP while booting now is seeing them, noticing they are not compatible with the new hardware and failing... if you need to save valuable data on that HD, I would put it back in the old PC to save the data to CD/DVD then clean install the OS on the new build PC.

Hey thanks I started with a fresh HD and a new installation of XP and it worked.

Hey, My New SATA HD is 250 gigs but when in windows it reads as 127 gigs, whats up with that?

mine was supposably 200 but registers as 180. Maybe windows automatically subtracts its own files from the max capacity?

what brand of drive. windows has to adjust to acomadate more thatn 127 gigs. use the software that came with the drive to help overcome this.
