Looking to get Comcast hight speed internet and I have xp but hubby has windows 98 (still in dark ages and refuses to come out) so am wondering if it will work with his pc. He has a Compaq pentium II 350. Comcast says must have win 2000 but I hear some people say win 98 is ok but just don't run the software they give you. What do you think? Tired of MSN dial up!
    thanks

I had win 98SE connected to Comcast, through a router. It will probably work but if it doesn't, they will offer no support. Your husband will then have two choices: a) be satisfied with dialup while you are on highspeed or b) update his computer or get a new one.

You don't need to run the software and you don't have to use Comcast as your start page nor sign up for a Comcast email account. I've been with them since june 2004.

I understand...my husband is the same way. I had to drag him kicking and screaming away from win 95! and put him in front of a refurbed dell with 2K on it. Then I had to drag him away from that (700MHz) to a newer used computer (still 2K) at 2+GHz. :D

Wow you believe in tough love and I must admire your bluntness! I'm getting the high speed even if he can't use it. He just came home from work and said he should be able to put win 2000 on his Pentium II 350 pc and if it won't work he'll get cheap No-Charge for $9.95 (how can they call it no-charge when they charge?) and throw MSN in the fish pond!

We are going to get the Comcast tomorrow and if it won't work w/ his win 98 then so be it. I at least will be bookin and he will still be slow cookin! So really neither one of us needs to put the software on our pc's I presume and all will work fine. I wonder what's on the software that Comcast wants imbedded in our computers? Thanks for the advice.

The software, if I remember, sets Comcast up as your start page.
There isn't anything devious on it. Besides, Comcast knows your IP and where you go since they deliver the content to your modem. :D
If you have trouble connecting, run the software.
I do remember that it wasn't working so I called and they needed to put my modem in the system. (I went the self-install route).

Win 2K should be doable and a lot more stable than 98SE. Your husband will thank you. Mine did after he didn't get all the freezing issues.
I had it running on an old 366MH notebook.
