Trying to get as much fishing in before the boys go back later this week. This is tonight's fishing trip...totally maxed out on our limit. More tomorrow night :D

Can you tell they get on really well? ;)

those are some nice fish there....

if you havent already you should take those guys out ocean/bay fishing, its a blast catching those big salmon and sharks. Rays are really fun to catch as well. My dad took me a while back in Humboldt Bay, little south of you guys, and we had tons of fun. Definitely an experience if they havent gone yet.

We don't have the kit to do ocean fishing, but we get plenty of big salmon and steelhead coming back up the river. Looking forward to the fall chinook run now :D

So we went fishing again tonight and maxed out once more with 20 rainbow trout. Then we maxed out at Baskin & Robbins *grins*

Looks like you all had a barrel of fun, Lev. I'm usually lucky if I catch anything, LoL. Around these parts, you really have to either go out in a boat, out of the metro area to catch much in the way of fish, unless you happen to get lucky.

That particular spot we just discovered this week. They are planting 3,000 trout per week in it at the moment...you just can't NOT catch fish ;) While we were there this guy came up and started fishing near us. He wasn't really clued up, so my husband gave him a few tips and set his line up better with kit. Turned out he was the guy who owned all the land in that area, including where a couple of businesses are sited. Really nice guy. Nice to make friends while out fishing :)

Good to see someone who really wants to be a dad to his kids. every time I have to go to court with my ex I get treated like dirt because so many guys there refuse to act like a father. Props man, and nice cathes too :)

Calltaker - I am sorry society treats you this way. People are so quick to assume and criticize a situation that they can barely begin to understand a lot of the time. I get it constantly, and it is very hurtful and assuming. As we said in a previous thread, when life gives you lemons, you just gotta keep making lemonade :) Happy squeezing :D

Its a form of self praise, some people need to feel they are better than others and the only way to reach that conclusion is to point the finger at someone else who's situation is different :)

True that. Funny thing is I find that I do a similar thing. Once in a while I happen to have the TV on when Jerry Springer comes on, and I say to myself, "Gee, my life isn't so bad as this person's" LOL... the original trash TV has uplifiting qualities :)

Last night we took the boys up the mountains to shoot the rifles. They'd never even seen one before, let alone fired one, and got on just great. Both were in inches of the bullseye...naturals ;)

The last photo is a little blurry, but captures Tom's "Holy crap!" expression perfectly after his first shot lol.

Lucky little guys, what kind of rifles are those Lev,I love guns:)

The one Tom was shooting was my 30-06, and the one Nathan was shooting (little guy) was a .22 automatic.

I'm always hearing that you say it like thirty 'o' six, what does it mean,30 inch barrel six shots,0.30 caliber six shots, enlighten me :)

  17. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

30-06 pronounced thirty aught six is a .308 inch (7.62 mm) caliber rifle, also known as the 7.62 x 63 mm, if that helps at all ( darn metricated Brits :p )

    How's his shoulder? First time I shot a 30-06 with a scope, gave myself a black eye...(LOL).

  19. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

I have a thick cissy pad on mine, so his shoulder is fine. So far he avoided the black eye....I think we've all been there and done that one at least once ;)

    .30 caliber 1906 series.

    that is what .30-06 is.

    Rock on Burning_Monkey:

The 30-06 Springfield is a United States military cartridge adopted in 1906 for the Model 1903 Springfield service rifle, which was based on the Mauser bolt action system. The 30-06 is actually a slightly modified version of the original 1903 cartridge, which was loaded with a 220-grain round noseded bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2300fps. Because of cartridge developments in Europe, it was considered advisable to change to a lighter weight, pointed 150-grain bullet at an increased velocity of 2700 fps. At the same time the case neck was shortened by .07". This improved round was designated the "Ball Cartridge, caliber 30, Model of 1906," but in practice, the nomenclature was shortened to 30-06. The 30-06 version can be chambered and fired in any rifle made for the original 1903 round, but the reverse is not true because of the difference in case length. For many years both the 1903 and 1906 configurations were loaded by sporting ammunition manufacturers. Shooting the '06 in the '03 chamber reportedly gave poor accuracy. Old catalogs list both rounds. Occasionally the 1903 version is called the 30-45 because original loading used 45 grains of smokeless powder.

That only works on a couple of calibers. For instance .45-140, which is huge, is 140 grains of powder and there are others out there that are other naming conventions.

It's quiet a bit to keep track of at times. :)

  23. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

140 grains is the weight of the projectile not the the charge

  24. Burning_Monkey

    Burning_Monkey MajorGeek

I think it is the weight of the powder charge on this one.

.45-75, .45-110, and .45-140 all shoot pretty much the same actual slug, but they have 3 different cartridge sizes.

And .45-140 will make you hate shooting a rifle in a hurry. :)

  25. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

A different cartridged size wouldnt chamber in a rifle, the cartridge size has to be constant,if you read Tims original explaination as the grain size goes down the velocity goes up,the opposite would be true if you were using less charge therefore

"The only explaination for the increased recoil in the 140grain round is the weight of the projectile" <dump this I mixed two posts up

EDIT have you switched over to .45 revolvers Burning monkey,I know different sized cartridges can go in revolvers?

  26. Burning_Monkey

    Burning_Monkey MajorGeek

    You are forgetting basic physics.

    Force = Mass * Acceleration

More powder equates to more acceleration in the slug. More acceleration in the slug means more force, in both directions.

There is also 3 seperate parts to a 'bullet'. The actual slug or projectile, the powder, and the case. .45-140 is a bigger 'bullet' than say .45-75 but that is because the case is longer and wider at the base. The actual slug is the same size, or at least really close to the same size. Another example is that the slugs from a .45-70 and .45-110 are totally interchangable, whereas the brass cases are not. You can use the .45-70 in the .45-110 but not the other way around.

It's kind of like the .38 and .357 comparison with pistols.

And no, I am still talking rifles for the most part.

It was loaded with a 220 grain round or 150 grain round

and the charge was 45 grains of smokeless powder 140grains of powder is a shitload the kind of charge a .50 machine gun would take

  28. Burning_Monkey

    Burning_Monkey MajorGeek

140 grains of black powder. :)

Way less powerful than smokeless powder and yes, it is a shit load of powder. You don't see many, if any, rifles made for .45-140 any more. And there are only a few made in .45-110 anymore.

The .45-140 was used instead of some thing like .50(not machine gun) to hunt buffalo. It was used so that people could use the same .45 slugs, but yet really but down a buffalo easily. :(

where dya get black powder from:confused: ,its used the same smokeless powder for 100 years, irrellavent 140 grains of weight of black powder or smokeless powder would roughly take up the same volume inside the cartridge

Do you have a picture of one of these .45 140grain rounds,is it a high velocity round like this

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:.303ammunition.jpeg

or similar to a pistol round

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:357_Magnum.jpg

If its a high velocity round the cartridge has to be EXACTLY the same size,i'm not so sure about rifles that use pistol rounds like underlever rifles from westerns:confused:

Can anyone else clear this up,I'm too tired and I want a resolution before I sleep :( :)

    I don't have an image, but I do have a link;
    http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_9_46/ai_64259211

    There is an image of .45-110 on this page about half way down;
    http://www.trackofthewolf.com/categ...Id=2&subId=190&styleId=931&PageSize=10&Page=2

And as far as how do I know it's black powder? I just do, there is nothing in the name that would tell you it's black powder.

The other thing that I know, is that with the .50 BMG for example, most of the brass casing is empty space. The powder charge takes up around a 1/3 of the space of the brass casing. This is to give enough O2 for the powder to burn.

  31. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

Yeh I can definitely see how one of those cartridges could vary in length burning monkey:)

You brought up another point now :D that the charge needs O2 to burn, black powder, smokeless powder all carry thier own oxygen in perfect ratios,I know about half charges the SAS use them in the Iranian embassy seige to stop the rounds going through walls, not to give the powder more oxygen

    Black powder

    2 KNO3 + S + 3C → K2S + N2 + 3CO2

  32. Burning_Monkey

    Burning_Monkey MajorGeek

You are right about using half charges, but there is way more room than needed inside those casings to provide air for the powder to use up. That is what loading 'hot' shells is all about. Adding more powder and/or a 'hotter' burning powder or a powder that burns with more gas(not smoke) being given off in a shorter amount of time.

EDIT: And sorry Lev for side tracking your thread with all this ballistics talk.

Hi all, I just joined the forums and was glad to see a fishing thread in the lounge!

We are getting ready for the fall fishing here in the Chesapeake Bay area.

Stripe bass migrating from the bay to the ocean are my favorite catch.

    http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/1928/21pounderroger1rr.th.jpg

This one weighed in at 21 lbs but they come much larger.
He was sitting in the cooler all night so he lost some most of his color. :(

And I would love to do some Australian fishing there nitecrawler,

Can I stay at your house? - lol.

HAHA....bass are meant to be bigger than trout (unless they are steelheads). Actually we catch chad here and use the eggs for bait for salmon, and the meat for crab pot fishing.

Welcome to MGs, Estimator - nice fish btw :)

@Nitecrawler - on my way out to you for the Aussie summer.....reserve me a room ;)

You should try fishing down South. The Redfish and Speckled trout in Louisiana are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also would give a boost to New Orleans and the areas that really need it after Hurricane Katrina
