I am running Windows XP and had the virus "XP Internet Security 2011" pop up. I ran Spybot and it cleaned it up fine and I was able to use the internet again, etc. I also had tried to use Malwarebytes but it didn't work so I uninstalled it. I shut down the computer last night as per usual and this morning it won't boot up past the black screen. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi,
Do you get any further with boot in safemode (F8 on boot), do you have an install disc for your system, what is the make and model of your machine, can you give us this info and as much as you can remember about what you done with your machine the night before this issue started.
Have you tried to start your machine from the last known good configuration..

To load the last known good configuration in Windows XP reboot the computer and as it's booting repeatedly press the F8 Key, which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Last Known Good Configuration" and press your Enter key. Running the last known good configuration will restore your last good system settings and will not delete anything. The only thing you may have to reinstall programs you have recently installed because the configuration for those programs may have been lost.

I am having a similar problem. i originally posted in malware removal - and was asked to post here.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1626735#post1626735

I was following the malware removal protocal, used malwarebytes. 1 item was detected, removed and then i was prompted to reboot. Now I cannot boot my OS Windows XP in any mode. All system diagnostics check out fine. It was suggested i download some CDs but I don't know how to get them to boot without my os.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

using HP probook 6540b. I don't have the install discs.

    Hi,

Since your problem is slightly different in that you are not getting just a black screen please start a new thread in the Software forum. Just copy and paste this post into a new thread (button on top left on front page of Software forum).

I can tell you how to burn a CD from one of those downloads but don't have any advice on which one to choose.
