Hi guys! Firstly, the back story to my mates woes are documented in the spyware board under the thread "posting for friend, followed sticky now no internet at all".
Basically, Chaslang helped to clean up my mates computer brilliantly but now IE seems broken!

Using Windows explorer it is possible to get on to the internet, and once in you can surf with quite a lot of functionality.... although my mate appears unable to update his own webpage.

However, double clicking(or navigating to via start all programs) the IE icon gives "cannot find server or DNS error" and cannot find any site at all, even when IP number typed in.

Chas recommended iefix (we have already tried LSPfix and a winsock repair thing to no avail).

The problem is with iefix..... my mates computer has the OS on a hidden partition of his hard drive (this is how it came from PCworld) and there is no CD.
So, when we ran iefix, we told it where to find C:windows\servicepackfiles\i386 with no problems. It then however asked something about html32.cnv and where to find that!!! We tried the i386 folder again but it then says "verifying...." and then says "now insert the windows CD" or something similar. We tried cancel so as it will just do the dll registration part but iefix simply gets into a loop between the verifying screen and the asking for a CD!
When I had to do a full restore for him about a year ago we simply booted the computer with the restore disc and off it went.... no CD's were required although the computer kept telling us it was copying files from somewhere (can't remember where now).

Your help will be most appreciated on this issue..... and a quick "how-to" on backing up his "favourites" folder will also be appreciated since it is huge and he really does not want to lose it! I apologise if it is really as simple as copy and paste!!

My mate has loads of pay/subscribe software purchased and downloaded from the net (e.g. Cyberscrub, Norton Internet Security etc.) so a solution that means not doing a "red disc" restore would be most welcome!!

Many thanks in anticipation for any pointers you can offer... I am off work today so will be around to answer any questions and give you as much information as I can... but I cannot get onto his computer until about 7pm this evening (BST)

    Regards

    Rick

OK guys I can see how busy you all are... I have had a search through some old threads and found quite an old one on how to convince XP that it needs to upgrade IE..... but it involves the registry!!!
The thread is quite old... can someone tell me if it is still valid?

Other than that, I would still really appreciate your thoughts on other ways to resolve my problem!

    Cheers guys

    Rick

I am shamlessly bumping this thread in the hopes that some kind person can help!!

I see this forum operates differently to the spyware one... no moderator???

Anyway, I will bump it until Saturday and then give up if noone can help.

    Cheers

The software forum doesn't operate any differently than the other forums. Questions are answered by volunteers, most of whom have full time jobs and families so they help out here in their spare time. It is quite possible the volunteer who would be able to answer your question has simply not seen your thread yet. While you have provided some good information one of the most important things needed is missing from your post....system information....please see the Announcement thread: Before You Post Asking For Help, Please Read This at the top of the forum.

If your thread has gone unanswered after a reasonable amount of time bumping is recommended..nothing shameless about it:)
