Fixing Slave Registry (vista 64)

My pc crashed after login after windows updates so I turned it off at the power and it came up with error:

0c000014c

windows\system32\config\system

So I tried my (ebay) boot + repair disk which worked a few months ago on a similar problem but now it won't boot from the disk. I've changed bios boot priority, set the CD/DVD as slave and master (also known to be working fine) and even done f8 straight to boot manager and selected the recognised CD/DVD drive and it won't boot.

So my next move was to boot from my old HD, which I copied to the new and currently failing HD around christmas. This gave me access again and I backed up files from the new HD.

I then tried renaming the hive files in the 'new disk'
windows\system32\config\system folder with a .old extension, but this only resulted in:

0xc000000f


windows\system32\config\system


I don't know what to try next other than more messing about in the system registry but I don't want to break anything so I would like any advice first about how to do it properly, or use a registry fixer that works on slave drives.

There is a subfolder in the config folder with a recent set of registry hives called regback. Try copying those over after renaming all of the hives in the config folder.
