I'm not sure it is possible to opt out of junk mail altogether because a lot of it is addressed to go to you or current residents. Some is sent to every mail box no matter who the occupant is.
If it is addressed to you from say insurance companies or credit card companies and such your only option I believe is to contact each individual company and ask to be removed from their mailing list. Very time consuming and possibly still not work.
I make sure to remove my name from it before trashing it.
I know one person who removes their name then puts it all in the return prepaid envelope and mails it back to who ever sent it. :p

I think Jerry78 might be referring to flyers, pamphlets, community news and similar crap.
Although we have a sign "No Junkmail" we still get some.

I do that. If something comes with a return post paid envelope, I return the junk to them and make them pay postage.

If I don't know the sender, anything else is treated as Junk so it gets blocked. Plus I'm selective to whom I hand out my email address and always ready to "unsubscribe" if need be;)

legalsuit, the thread isn't about email, it is about snail mail. Mail that gets delivered into your mailbox by the post office.

I was executor of an estate for a former friend, co-worker and roommate. She got lots of catalogs. As a result, the catalogs were then sent to my mailing address. It took years but every time a catalog arrived, I called the number on the back to unsubscribe and gave the code that was printed on it.

I've called local companies that send mail I'm not interested in (hearing aids, auto insurance, financial planners) and ask to be removed from the mailing list explaining that it is a waste of money to mail to me because it gets put into recycling, unopened. Most are understanding and the mail stops.

Of course next week is the primary election in PA so we're drowning in political mail. That can't be stopped so it gets put into recycling right away.

This works really good in a potbelly stove or similar as it gets really hot while still smouldering but outside the cold wind might take too much heat away and it might keep going out or need some wood to keep it going.
My friend uses this method to make the pulp for logs for his patio fire pit that is outside in his backyard and he mixes 3 or 4 cups of Potassium Nitrate or Sodium Nitrate into the water before adding it to the dry shredded paper. These chemicals are an oxidant and when the water evaporates it leaves a small trace amount of oxidant distributed through the dried logs and this sustains a consistent burning of the logs even in really windy conditions.
BTW he finds it best to have less than 40% of the really glossy, shiny brochures and he finds newsprint, office paper and corrugated cardboard to burn the most consistently. He doesn't use the heavily plasticised brochures because they stink when they burn.
Make sure the logs are very dry before you try to burn them.

Oh and he makes four logs at once using something like this and this presses a lot more of the water out than making bigger tub patties in the bottom of the bucket

My mailbox is located in a small box with about all the neighborhood mailboxes..I had put a box next to the mailboxes labeled, JUNK MAIL and it was used for a while, until it rained!!

at my office, our emails all have the byline,"think green before you print"
YET upstairs I have 20 full size boxes/lids in my closet that I've taken from work(trash) and use for organization (each box held 40 reams of printer paper)
we go through more than a box aday of paper

so then add in daily trash I get in the mail and thinking "green" is beyond me
oh, then my neighbor has a huge V12 pickup that gets 12mpg ..yet I have a low flow toilet that needs to be flushed 2-3x and even THEN won't properly clean the bowl.(illegal to get high flow toilets becase THEY WASTE WATER!!)

    stupid people make stupid laws

    Politicians ignore real problems.
They sit in air-conditioned boardrooms, drink bottled water (and in South Africa eat KFC), and debate solutions for what they imagine are problems.
Then we vote for the next bunch.
And the cycle starts all over again...

Pretty much, why vote? HIlary and gore won the popular vote, but we dont live in a democracy, so they were't elected
then I see dumb stuff like
Congresss holding congressionall hearings about STEROIDS? wtf?
or some congress lady asking a CEO why he can't give a salary to support the lifestyle someone chooses

the latest abortion laws passed by states which are unconstitutional, is even more insane

Excellent advice and tips, thank you!

When I say outdoor fireplace, I mean wind isn't going to be a factor. She's got an entire outdoor living room complete with a pool table/bar area and a seating area. The fireplace is pretty serious. :D

WOW that is a nice area to be taking it easy and sipping a beverage and the paper logs will burn perfectly well in that heater......my friend just has an open steel firepit on legs with some mesh over the top so you can cook things on it. He stacks about 10 logs in the middle as the fire area is a bit bigger than 3 feet diameter.

Oh and I remembered another tip.........you can use the logs as fire lighters, just cut them up into smaller pieces with a serrated knife and pour some naptha, paraffin or diesel on the pieces ......whatever is handy really and voila :)

This is similar to his firepit
